Three-year effort will intensify protection of Kruger National Park’s rhino population, drawing lessons to address poaching that finances conflict in Africa

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">The Howard G. Buffett Foundation (<a href="http://www.thehowardgbuffettfoundation.org/">HGBF</a>) , a private foundation in the United States; the Nature Conservation Trust (NCT), a South African public benefit organization (PBO); and South African National Parks (SANParks) today announced an historic RAND 255 million (USD $23.7 million), three-year initiative to combat rhino poaching in Kruger National Park and test anti-poaching tactics that can be applied in other regions of Africa, where poaching can be a source of funding for armed groups. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">The announcement was made at the Rosebank office of Standard Bank, which also announced its own support for the initiative by providing favorable banking fees and interest on the funds which they will hold.<br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">The effort in Kruger will create an Intensive Protection Zone (IPZ) using sophisticated detection and tracking equipment and infrastructure on the ground and in the air; elite canine units and highly-trained ranger teams; and improved intelligence gathering and observation and surveillance systems. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Kruger is currently home to over 40% of the world’s remaining 22,000 rhinos, the largest single population of rhinos in the world. Since January 2010, 1,383 rhinos have been poached from Kruger National Park, part of a larger assault that resulted in 2,368 rhinos poached in South Africa over the past few years. In some areas of Africa, entire populations of rhino have been eliminated. <br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">Kruger’s poaching problem is fueled mainly by illicit criminal networks in Mozambique, South Africa, and East Asia, but evidence suggests that armed groups elsewhere in Africa derive significant funding from poaching activities. Kruger’s IPZ will also serve as a testing ground to inform targeted efforts to combat poaching in these other African regions. <br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">“SANParks, thanks to the leadership of David Mabunda, and Kruger National Park, under the direction of General Johan Jooste, provide a unique opportunity to test new technology and new ideas within the best operating national parks system on the continent,” said NCT Chairman and HGBF CEO Howard G. Buffett. “This effort joins our foundation’s historic support for conservation with our current focus on conflict mitigation in Africa, particularly in the Great Lakes region.” <br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">“The scale, complexity, and strategic value of this initiative is truly unprecedented for SANParks, and we believe will be transformative in our ongoing efforts to address poaching and the decimation of the rhino population in Kruger National Park,” said SANParks CEO David Mabunda. “More importantly, the lessons we hope to learn and share across SANParks and the continent will, we believe, develop new and more effective ways to combat illicit wildlife trade, particularly where it is financing armed groups.” <br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">The Leadership for Conservation in Africa (LCA), led by its South African-based CEO Chris Marais, will provide advisory and advocacy support for the collaboration. NCT and HGBF have a long history of support for conservation in Africa. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">NCT, with 100% of its funding provided by HGBF, created the Jubatus Cheetah Reserve in 2001 and the Ukulima Research Farm in 2007, both located in Limpopo Province, South Africa. That comment was made by Ken Allen, Global CEO for DHL Express . </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"> </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">This probably highlights how serious Africa is being taken in the global boardrooms of large corporations. Charles Brewer, Managing Director for DHL Express Sub-Saharan Africa shares his sentiment and adds, “More than ever, companies are now looking to expand into Africa. More than ever, companies are looking to invest in its diverse markets. More than ever, commercial opportunities abound across the continent. It’s clearly time for Africa…”<br /><br />This week Deutsche Post DHL, the world’s leading postal and express group announced its full year results. The group posted revenues of more than EUR 55 billion with boosted profitability once again in 2013. These improvements have been particularly attributed to the company’s exceptional market position in the world’s emerging markets, including Africa.<br /><br />Brewer adds, “DHL Express is the market leader across Africa, and our unparalleled footprint and continued investment in the continent is testament to that. During 2013, we continued with our expansion plans throughout Sub-Saharan Africa, investing heavily in facilities and increasing our vehicle and aviation fleet. We have continued to showcase our commitment to Africa and have a firm belief and vested interest in Africa delivering on its obvious promise.”<br /><br />Brewer points to the recent International Air Transport Association (IATA) Airline Industry Forecast 2013-2017 report, which revealed that Africa is estimated to be the fastest growing region globally over the forecast period, with an expected five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.0%, while a growth rate of 3.2% (CAGR) is expected for international freight volumes.<br /><br />“The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has forecasted economic growth of 2.8% in 2014 for South Africa, and 6.1% for the sub-Saharan African (SSA) region, and with the continued growth from intra-Africa and international trade, the outlook for the SSA logistics industry is extremely positive,” says Brewer.<br /><br />He says that the routes expected to experience the most significant growth in Africa in 2014 are linked to the fastest growing markets which include Ethiopia, Ghana and Nigeria. <br /><br />Brewer attributes DHL’s positive trade forecast to more than just the economic statistics, and adds, “Africa is an unbelievably entrepreneurial and dynamic continent and I firmly believe that the SMEs will be the engine of growth for the years ahead”.<br /><br />He says that it is difficult to ignore e-commerce on the continent as it has become a way of life. “Buying and selling online is growing year on year in Africa, which includes a big shift towards e-commerce in South Africa. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"> </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">More than R4 billion of goods were traded through e-commerce in 2013 in South Africa as consumers realise the safety, convenience and time saving benefits of shopping online. Other factors that will likely influence trade are developments in technology, healthcare, construction and services, as well as the increase in manufacturing in Africa.” <br /><br />Brewer says that this year, the company has various planned investments into Sub-Saharan Africa, including the opening of a number of new facilitates, and planned expansion in Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana and Angola. DHL Express SSA, will also be expanding its dedicated air fleet adding a number of new planes to the West Africa region, including a Boeing 737. <br /><br />“The introduction of these new facilities and planes reflect the continuation of our expansion strategy for 2014. This allows us to serve our customers better, who in turn, can process, sell or assemble their products faster and more securely. <div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Investors in the Nigerian Capital Market are in for good times as The Nigerian Stock Exchange (</span><a href="http://www.nse.com.ng)/"><span style="font-size: large;">NSE</span></a><span style="font-size: large;">) as commenced the reduction of the cost of its Trade Alert service by about Naira 1.24 billion from March 2014 via the scrapping of the current charge of 0.06% of every trade on The Exchange and an introduction of an enhanced notification system, X-Alert which will be charged at a flat fee of N4 per transaction.<br /><br />Speaking on the development, Mr Ade Bajomo, Executive Director of Market Operations and Technology at The Exchange noted that the enhanced X-Alert is a service that will allow the investing public know when a transaction has been made on their account.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"> “Each time investors buy or sell a security, an alert is sent to them via a Text Message to the recipient’s mobile phone or via an e-mail to the recipient’s mailbox. So what that does is to bring real time notification plus transparency to the market at market rates while safeguarding against unauthorised sale or purchase of securities” said Bajomo.<br /><br />Bajomo further noted that “The big difference for the investing community is that rather than pay 0.12% of every trade roundtrip, investors will now pay a flat fee of N4.00. Based on 2013 figures, the trade alert charges with the old system was some N 1.25billion; with the improved notification system however, the annual cost of the alerts would be some N5.52million based on a N4 flat fee – that is a reduction of N 1.24 billion per annum in the cost incurred by investors transacting in the market”.<br /> <br />Casting more light on the development, the Managing Director of CSCS, Mr. Kyari Bukar shared that the enhanced service is delivered in real time to customers. Clitoraid’s team to hold building inauguration ceremony at its delayed facility on March 7 and launch surgeries at another hospital

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span id="goog_461328246"></span><a href="https://www.blogger.com/"><span style="font-size: large;">According<span id="goog_461328247"></span></span></a><span style="font-size: large;"> to a statement released today by the nonprofit organization Clitoraid , pressure from the Catholic Church and other detractors of the International Raelian Movement (IRM) has caused Burkina Faso's government to block the scheduled March 7 opening of Clitoraid’s clitoral repair hospital, known as the Kamkaso Hospital, in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso. Nicknamed “the Pleasure Hospital", the Kamkaso facility is the first of its kind in the world.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"></span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">“Although the government has suddenly withdrawn its approval for surgeries to be performed there, this facility, once open, will provide free surgery for victims of female genital mutilation,” said Dr. Brigitte Boisselier, president of Clitoraid and spokesperson for the IRM. “The procedure repairs the physical damage they endured. But this wonderful mission has now been stymied by the Catholic Church and its cronies, who are conducting a smear campaign against it for their own selfish motives.”</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"></span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">Boisselier said Clitoraid will seek immediate legal redress through the courts.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"></span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">“In the meantime, the surgeries we had scheduled will still take place over the next few weeks, at another hospital in Bobo-Dioulasso,” she said. “We’re going ahead as planned.”</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"></span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">She went on to describe why the Kamkaso Hospital will not open on March 7.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"></span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">“Although the request for licensure of the new hospital was submitted in 2011 and we received repeated assurances from regional and national officials that the hospital could open on March 7, the health minister of Burkina Faso has explained to a representative of AVFE, our local Clitoraid partner, that the license will not be approved for our scheduled inauguration date of March 7,” Boisselier explained. “Nevertheless, we will go ahead with our inauguration ceremony as planned. And our surgical team will still operate on the patients scheduled for the procedure, but that will take place at another hospital."</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"></span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">She said that an official source who requested anonymity told her that strong pressure from IRM detractors, especially the Catholic Church, was responsible for both the license refusal and the cancellation of the First Lady of Burkina Faso’s participation in the opening ceremony.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"></span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">“By seeking to prevent our opening, the Catholic Church has become an accomplice of the criminals who mutilate the genitals of African women,” Boisselier declared. “Along with its mission of restoring mutilated clitorises for FGM victims, Clitoraid’s Pleasure Hospital will be a strong deterrent to those who still practice this barbaric custom. They would stop making the excisions since it’s foolish to destroy something that can be readily restored.”</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"></span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">Boisselier said this stance taken by the Catholic Church against Clitoraid is hardly a surprise, given the Vatican’s record.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"></span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">“Those blocking our opening are the same criminals who support pedophile priests and money laundering by Vatican banks,” she said. “And their directives against using condoms are responsible for thousands of unnecessary AIDS deaths in Africa.”</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"></span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">Boisselier said Clitoraid will take prompt legal action to open the hospital.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"></span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">“This pressure to close us down will only delay the opening,” she said. “Our attorneys are already looking into various legal options and there will also be worldwide protests in front of Burkina Faso’s embassies.”</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"></span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">As evidence of the pressures brought by the Catholic Church, Boisselier cited the following declaration made against the Kamkaso Hospital by Professor R. Marie Charlemagne Ouedraogo, a Knight of the French Legion of Honor and Commander of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, a well-known branch of the Catholic Church.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"></span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">“This is a big campaign of fraud organized by the sect of Rael with the complicity of certain doctors of Burkina Faso! The health ministry and the governor are beseeched to stop this poisonous campaign! Also, the complicit doctors will have to appear before the medical board very soon!"</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"></span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">"How can a doctor who performs these surgeries himself at very high cost to his patients accuse us of a fraudulent campaign when his rates are way too high for the poor women who planned to come to the Kamkaso hospital?” Boisselier asked. “What is the real fraud here? Clitoraid offers free surgeries performed by competent volunteer doctors, and they follow a procedure that has been published officially by its originator, Dr. Pierre Foldes of France. It has already been performed on thousands of women.”</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"></span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">Boisselier went on to elaborate about what she considers the real reason for the smear campaign against Clitoraid and the Kamkaso hospital.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"></span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">“The real reason for this delay in the hospital opening is clearly linked to the fact that this purely humanitarian project was initiated by Rael, spiritual leader of the Raelian Movement,” she said. “The people putting pressure against this hospital prefer to pursue a pseudo-philosophical vendetta for their own profit instead of thinking of the 80 women who will be in Bobo-Dioulasso to have their free surgery between March 3 and March 14.”</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"></span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">According to Boisselier, the surgeries will be done at the hospital of a doctor friend who will host Clitoraid's medical team.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"></span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">“Our surgeons are licensed to perform surgeries in Burkina Faso,” she pointed out. "The people responsible for these pressures against us should be ashamed. The Kamkaso hospital is the collective effort of thousands of people of various philosophical backgrounds.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"></span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> They have all contributed to restore the pleasure of life to thousands of women who experienced deep trauma. To prevent them from receiving this voluntary and free help simply because the people offering it don't believe in their god is outrageous. <div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">A fact-finding mission to the Democratic Republic of the Congo—led by Nobel peace laureate Leymah Gbowee of Liberia, and organized by the International Campaign to Stop Rape & Gender Violence in Conflict—today called on the government of the DRC and the international community to put women at the centre of peace efforts and bring an end to rampant sexual violence.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">“They say that the DRC is the rape capital of the world,” said Gbowee. “But what I see is that it is the capital of strong women and solidarity among women. We are here to support the courageous women who have survived rape and other forms of sexual violence—and are now working to help other survivors. These women are the peacemakers, and they need to be supported to bring true peace to this country. They have told us: 'enough is enough'--no more war on women's bodies.”</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">The group, which also included American journalists, philanthropists and women's right experts, visited Kigali (Rwanda), Bunia in the Orientale province of the DRC and Bukavu in South Kivu of the DRC. At each stop, the group met with women's organizations, grassroots groups working on justice, provincial government officials, and officials from the UN and other international organizations—and also toured women-led projects aimed at supporting survivors of sexual violence. The delegation came to the DRC at the invitation of women's organizations in the DRC that are part of the International Campaign to Stop Rape & Gender Violence in Conflict.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">“We work with organizations around the world who care deeply about the situation of women in the DRC,” said Julienne Lusenge, the President of Solidarite Feminine pour la Paix et le Developpment Integral (SOFEPADI). “Together with our partners in the International Campaign to Stop Rape & Gender Violence in Conflict, we are calling upon the governments of the region to come together with us to ensure adequate access to care for survivors of sexual violence all across the DRC—and end the impunity that still exists for committing rape and other atrocities against women.”</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">The fact-finding mission met with over 350 women in the DRC. The women presented the delegation with key recommendations for the government of the DRC, governments in the region as well as the international community. Philips’ Fabric of Africa report highlights innovation in tackling Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs)
