<div style="text-align: justify;">Arterial Network (AN) will be attending the upcoming National Arts Festival in full force from this weekend, to launch a series of publications serving the African arts and culture community; to induct a new West African secretariat; and to prepare for a Conference on African Creative Economy to be held in Egypt during September.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Representatives from Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Kenya, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda and South Africa will attend the organisation’s Steering Committee meeting in Grahamstown on 1 and 2 July.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Over the course of festival week, Arterial Network will also facilitate the exploration of festival collaboration between South-South countries. The organisation is hosting the Grahamstown visit of Mariana Soares Ribeiro, a representative of the Cena Contemporânea Festival, one of the biggest performing arts festivals in Brazil. Soares Ribeiro’s week-long visit will include scouting for African creative content for the Brazilian festival taking place during September.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

Si dhani kwamba ipo dini hapa duniani ambayo inamkosesha haki mwanamke kumiliki au kufanya kitu ambacho ni cha maaendeleo, lakini wapo watu ambao wamekuwa wakitumia mgogongo au bazia la dini kwa kufanya vitendo vya hujuma kwa mwanamke asiendelee kiuchumi, kisiasa na kijamii.<br />
Ingawaje zipo kauli mbio au maoni tafauti ya kuwawezesha wanawake kiuchumi lakini njia zote hizo bado hazitowi fursa ya kumfanya mwanamke wa Tanzania kuweza kuendelea na kujielewa yeye ni nani na wajibu wake ni nini katika jamii na ujenzi wa taifa lake. <br />

THE 14th WINNERS ANNOUNCED DURING ZIFF

<div style="text-align: justify;">The Jury of the 14th Annual Zanzibar International Film Festival have announced the winners in all competitive categories. The winner of the prestigious Golden Dhow award for feature film is The Rugged Priest by Bob Nyanja (Kenya). Based on real life events it is a story of a courageous priest who challenges corrupt and violent political power in the name of human justice, even though his life is in danger.“The film is made with very good cinematographic technique and intelligent use of filmic language” said the ZIFF Jury</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The silver Dhow feature film went to Togetherness Supreme by Nathan Collett (Kenya). The Jury described it as a “remarkable, vibrant feature film of high technical skill and creativity” depicting a difficult and troubled period in the history of Kenya.The Golden Dhow for Documentary Film: went to Hidden Truth by Penelope Machipi (Zambia) A “life affirming” documentary that displays the power of film in encouraging and empowering the abused women represented in the film to emancipate themselves and change their circumstances. “We were deeply touched by their courage and honesty and impressed with the filmmaker’s sensitive approach to this difficult subject.” said the ZIFF Jury. The Silver Dhow Documentary Film: The Last Voyage by Riaan Hendricks (South Africa) The film tells the story of the difficulties a family goes through when dealing with the demise and eventual death of a Father. The Jury “moved by this film which unfolds like an intimate, personal diary” Best East African Film: went to Lezare by Zelalem Woldemariam (Ethiopia). A touching, symbolic story based on an old Ethiopian folktale. What is the solution to the starvation of Africa’s poor? A quick, temporary solution for today, or a long-lasting solution for the future? This question is posed through the voice of a child. “The film displays good technical skill and captivating camerawork. “ said the Jury. Best Short Film: was awarded to A Beautiful Snowy Day by Mahaya Petrossian and Amir Toodehroosa (Iran). In the film, a mother faces a critical moment in her life, forced to choose between her son or to end her marriage and protect her family. “The jury chose this beautiful and heart-rending film which represents a true example of a universal problem of the position of women in a patriarchal society. The story is told with great essence and style. The metaphors are well chosen and encourage deep reflection. “ said the Jury. WIPO announces Rights Registry Project for West African States

<div style="text-align: justify;"><a href="http://www.wipo.int//pressroom">WIPO</a> Director General Francis Gurry today announced a project to build a common digital platform which will help streamline the identification of protected musical works across 11 West African countries, helping creators from these countries get paid for their work through a simplified and standardized rights registration system. U.S. firm Google will be WIPO’s technology partner in developing this new web-based system, which builds upon WIPOCOS (WIPO Software for Collective Management of Copyright and Related Rights).</div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;">A project using WIPOCOS to build more efficient copyright infrastructures in developing countries was approved by WIPO member states as part of the Organization’s Development Agenda. WIPOCOS will help collecting management organisations in the participating countries share information on the identification of works and relevant interested parties, making cross border licensing easier. Seventeen films have been selected for the competition which is open to all African films and Co-productions between Africans and other nationalities.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The films submitted are on social, political and developmental issues with the intention to inform, educate, entertain and, most importantly, to motivate and stimulate audiences to take action. After WWII he lived in France where he became a forceful spokesperson within the radical arts and political movements of the region. During a 1961 visit home to Africa, then exploding with revolutionary fervor, creative possibility and post-colonial backlash, this laborer-turned-writer recognized that African people could not be effectively reached through written literature in any language. Cinema, however, could tell the essential stories of Africa to the African people. Sembène chose to devote his energies to creating emancipating and restorative images for the African people. his 50 years of creative output blazed trail for generations of African, African-American and African-European writers, filmmakers and scholars. Highlights included World Premiere’s Making the Band (Uganda/Canada) and Journey to State House (TZ), live music from African legends Oliver Mtukudzi (Tuku), Mrisho Mpoto and Jhikoman, plus the presence of the very special guest Vice President, the Hon. Seif Ali Iddi, at an exciting opening weekend for ZIFF.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The opening on Saturday night began with a ceremony at the Old Fort with local talent performing music, song and dance. After the ceremony, the audience enjoyed the opening film and premiere – Ugandan film ‘Making The Band’. This lighthearted drama follows four young woman trying to make it big in the music world with their Afro-pop band based in the most unlikely of places: Montreal, Canada. A brief power cut on the island didn’t dampened the spirit of the audience who went on to dance the night away at Mrisho Mpoto and Oliver Mtukudzi.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Tanzanian Mrisho, even joined Oliver onstage for a song much to the delight of the crowd. Javed Jafferji’s film Journey to the State House, about the life of Zanzibarian Vice President, drew a huge crowd to the Old Fort on Sunday night, who were delighted with the presence and speech by the popular Hon. Seif Ali Idd. Other films on Sunday at The Old Fort included a heart-warming documentary starring a group of local boys called The Children of Ramadan by Lovinsa Kavuma. The Festival of Festivals program began with a selection of inspiring films from Australia at the House of Wonders, followed by Bran Nue Day at The Old Fort</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Community outreach is an important part of ZIFF as demonstrated by the Women and Children’s Panorama programs. ZIFF in collaboration with FHI (Family Health International) hosted a conference on June 19 in StoneTown on HIV/AWARENESS & PREVENTION. The conference attracted over 140 attendees comprised of men, women, teens and children; and was a successful public dialogue on subjects such as differences in HIV/AIDS transmission between men and women, sexual practices and conduct; as well as some spontaneous performances, often hilarious, from the audience. Other FHI workshops will be conducted in villages throughout Zanzibar, with the TTFF (Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival) docudrama'Positive & Pregnant' from June 21-25.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Festivities continue all week until 26th June, with free daytime film screenings for locals, an amazing workshop program, more great music  and daily press conferences at 3pm. Rangi ya filamu hii inagusa hisia na ukubwa wa kisiasa wa Maalim Seif Shariff Hamad kuchaguliwa kutokana na nguvu za watu wa Zanzibar mwaka 2010. Filamu inasherehekea dhamira yake binafsi na ushirikishaji wake katika kuleta amani Zanzibar, na mtumishi kama kifungua macho kwa wale wasiokua na historia ya siasa za Tanzania na Zanzibar. Ingawa mada kujadiliwa ndani ya filamu ni ya kisiasa, mtayarishaji wa filamu hii na mkurugenzi, Javed Jafferji, anasisitiza kuwa lengo kuu sio la kisiasa zaidi, bali kua ni "sherehe ya maisha ya mtu mmoja wa kipekee na mapambano, na mkazo juu ya umuhimu wa amani katika visiwa vya Zanzibar. UNAIDS welcomes new UN Security Council

<div style="text-align: justify;">The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) welcomes a new United Nations (UN) Security Council resolution on HIV which has been adopted at the UN Security Council in New York. The resolution calls for increased efforts by UN Member States to address HIV in peacekeeping missions. It also calls for HIV prevention efforts among uniformed services to be aligned with efforts to end sexual violence in conflict and post-conflict settings. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;">"The Security Council has made major strides in addressing sexual violence in conflict. But rape is still a weapon of choice. This is an atrocious human rights violation and a public health threat,” said United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. “I urge all Member States to link efforts to combat HIV with our campaigns against sexual violence and for the rights of women."</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The resolution builds on the previous UN Security Council resolution 1308, which was adopted in 2000. The new resolution calls on the United Nations and UN Member States to bolster global and regional partnerships and integrate comprehensive HIV programmes into efforts to prevent conflict, ensure security and build peace.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">“Global, national and personal insecurity undermine efforts to prevent new HIV infections and increase access to HIV services for both peacekeepers and civilians,” said the President of Gabon, Ali Bongo Ondimba. “This resolution will help to mitigate the impact of HIV among uniformed services and civilian populations affected by conflict and increase access to HIV services.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The resolution, which was tabled by Gabon, President of the Security Council for June 2011, recognises that HIV can have a uniquely devastating impact on all sectors and levels of society and that in conflict and post-conflict situations these impacts may be felt more profoundly. It also recognizes that conditions of violence and instability in conflict and post-conflict situations can exacerbate the spread of HIV because of displacement, conflict-related sexual violence and reduced access to HIV services. <br />
Since the adoption of resolution 1308 in 2000, progress has been made in addressing HIV and security. About 60% of UN Member States have integrated HIV programmes for military, police and other uniformed personnel. However the quality of programmes is variable and resources to fund the programmes are often insufficient. </div><div style="text-align: justify;">“Peacekeepers can play a leading role in HIV prevention as they secure peace around the world,” said Michel Sidibé, Executive Director of UNAIDS. “Uniformed personnel can act as agents of positive change, particularly in relation to preventing sexual violence in conflict and post-conflict situations.” </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Evidence shows that the threat AIDS poses to peace and security is far more nuanced than initially thought. Both the characteristics of conflict and the epidemic itself have evolved significantly over the past 10 years with sexual violence being increasingly used as a tactic of war. Addressing this requires a broadening and strengthening of HIV programmes for peacekeepers to ensure an effective response to HIV and sexual violence in conflict and post-conflict settings.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">“Renewed commitment around the new agenda is needed to ensure that the AIDS response effectively contributes to all UN peacekeeping efforts to ensure security and promote and build peace,” said Alain Le Roy, Under-Secretary General for United Nations Peacekeeping Operations. </div><div style="text-align: justify;">During the UN Security Council session, both the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the Executive Director of UNAIDS paid tribute to the late US Ambassador to the United Nations, Richard Holbrooke, for championing resolution 1308. In 2000, Ambassador Holbrook said, “Resolution 1308 should be well known and it should be fully implemented. It should not be the end of the process, but only a cornerstone for the future.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Reinvigorated efforts around a new HIV security agenda will be instrumental in addressing the impact of AIDS on peace and security. UNAIDS will work with member states to scale-up access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support for all uniformed services, including police, immigration, prison and the navy, to prevent HIV and end violence against women and girls. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
