<div style="text-align: justify;">Ipo haja kwa vyombo vya habari vya kijamii kuhakikisha kwamba vinaanda na kuratibu vipindi bora ambavyo vitaweza kusaidia jamii na hasa ya wanawake ambayo inaonekana ipo chini kiuchumi, kisiasa na kijamii. Kwa hakika vipindi bora vya radio jamii n.k zina nafasi kubwa katika kuhakikisha kwamba jamii inabadilika kutokana na mifumo mibovu ambayo kwa njia moja au nyengine zimekuwa zikidumaza maaendeleo ya wanawake nchini kwa visigingizio tofauti kama vile dini, mila na desturi za kabila fulani.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Wapo wanaodhani kwamba mwanamke si chochote si lote kutokana na mila, silka na tamaduni zao ambazo kwa hakika kwa njia moja au nyengine sheria na tamaduni hizi kandamizi zinakwenda kinyume na matakwa halisi ya sheria za nchi na dini.<br />
Si dhani kwamba ipo dini hapa duniani ambayo inamkosesha haki mwanamke kumiliki au kufanya kitu ambacho ni cha maaendeleo, lakini wapo watu ambao wamekuwa wakitumia mgogongo au bazia la dini kwa kufanya vitendo vya hujuma kwa mwanamke asiendelee kiuchumi, kisiasa na kijamii.<br />
Ingawaje zipo kauli mbio au maoni tafauti ya kuwawezesha wanawake kiuchumi lakini njia zote hizo bado hazitowi fursa ya kumfanya mwanamke wa Tanzania kuweza kuendelea na kujielewa yeye ni nani na wajibu wake ni nini katika jamii na ujenzi wa taifa lake. <br />
Kwa maana hiyo basi maneno ya wanawake wakiwezeshwa wanweze haya bado hayajawa na mantiki yoyote muhimu ambao inawafanya wanawake wawee kujikombo kiuchumi, kisiasa na kijami bali kauli hii inawafanye wanawake waendelee kuwa wategemezi kutoka kwa watu wao wa karibu(wahisani), mashirika binafsi, vyama vya kisiasa n.k</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

THE 14th WINNERS ANNOUNCED DURING ZIFF

<div style="text-align: justify;">The Jury of the 14th Annual Zanzibar International Film Festival have announced the winners in all competitive categories. The winner of the prestigious Golden Dhow award for feature film is The Rugged Priest by Bob Nyanja (Kenya). Based on real life events it is a story of a courageous priest who challenges corrupt and violent political power in the name of human justice, even though his life is in danger.“The film is made with very good cinematographic technique and intelligent use of filmic language” said the ZIFF Jury</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The silver Dhow feature film went to Togetherness Supreme by Nathan Collett (Kenya). The Jury described it as a “remarkable, vibrant feature film of high technical skill and creativity” depicting a difficult and troubled period in the history of Kenya.The Golden Dhow for Documentary Film: went to Hidden Truth by Penelope Machipi (Zambia) A “life affirming” documentary that displays the power of film in encouraging and empowering the abused women represented in the film to emancipate themselves and change their circumstances. “We were deeply touched by their courage and honesty and impressed with the filmmaker’s sensitive approach to this difficult subject.” said the ZIFF Jury. The Silver Dhow Documentary Film: The Last Voyage by Riaan Hendricks (South Africa) The film tells the story of the difficulties a family goes through when dealing with the demise and eventual death of a Father. The Jury “moved by this film which unfolds like an intimate, personal diary” Best East African Film: went to Lezare by Zelalem Woldemariam (Ethiopia). A touching, symbolic story based on an old Ethiopian folktale. What is the solution to the starvation of Africa’s poor? A quick, temporary solution for today, or a long-lasting solution for the future? This question is posed through the voice of a child. “The film displays good technical skill and captivating camerawork. “ said the Jury. Best Short Film: was awarded to A Beautiful Snowy Day by Mahaya Petrossian and Amir Toodehroosa (Iran). In the film, a mother faces a critical moment in her life, forced to choose between her son or to end her marriage and protect her family. “The jury chose this beautiful and heart-rending film which represents a true example of a universal problem of the position of women in a patriarchal society. The story is told with great essence and style. The metaphors are well chosen and encourage deep reflection. “ said the Jury. In past years, more than 320 groups have performed, including Jose Chameleone, Samba Mapangala & Orchestra Virunga, Saida Karoli, Natacha Atlas, Didier Awadi, Bassekou Kouyate, Jagwa Music, Ba Cissoko, Nyota Ndogo, Thandiswa, Culture Musical Club, Orchestre Poly Rhythmo de Cotonou and more. WIPO announces Rights Registry Project for West African States

<div style="text-align: justify;"><a href="http://www.wipo.int//pressroom">WIPO</a> Director General Francis Gurry today announced a project to build a common digital platform which will help streamline the identification of protected musical works across 11 West African countries, helping creators from these countries get paid for their work through a simplified and standardized rights registration system. U.S. firm Google will be WIPO’s technology partner in developing this new web-based system, which builds upon WIPOCOS (WIPO Software for Collective Management of Copyright and Related Rights).</div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;">A project using WIPOCOS to build more efficient copyright infrastructures in developing countries was approved by WIPO member states as part of the Organization’s Development Agenda. WIPOCOS will help collecting management organisations in the participating countries share information on the identification of works and relevant interested parties, making cross border licensing easier. <div style="text-align: justify;">The Sembene Films in Competition will be screened this Wednesday and Thursday this week at The House of Wonders in Stonetown. Seventeen films have been selected for the competition which is open to all African films and Co-productions between Africans and other nationalities.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The films submitted are on social, political and developmental issues with the intention to inform, educate, entertain and, most importantly, to motivate and stimulate audiences to take action. After WWII he lived in France where he became a forceful spokesperson within the radical arts and political movements of the region. During a 1961 visit home to Africa, then exploding with revolutionary fervor, creative possibility and post-colonial backlash, this laborer-turned-writer recognized that African people could not be effectively reached through written literature in any language. Cinema, however, could tell the essential stories of Africa to the African people. Sembène chose to devote his energies to creating emancipating and restorative images for the African people. his 50 years of creative output blazed trail for generations of African, African-American and African-European writers, filmmakers and scholars. Highlights included World Premiere’s Making the Band (Uganda/Canada) and Journey to State House (TZ), live music from African legends Oliver Mtukudzi (Tuku), Mrisho Mpoto and Jhikoman, plus the presence of the very special guest Vice President, the Hon. Seif Ali Iddi, at an exciting opening weekend for ZIFF.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The opening on Saturday night began with a ceremony at the Old Fort with local talent performing music, song and dance. After the ceremony, the audience enjoyed the opening film and premiere – Ugandan film ‘Making The Band’. This lighthearted drama follows four young woman trying to make it big in the music world with their Afro-pop band based in the most unlikely of places: Montreal, Canada. A brief power cut on the island didn’t dampened the spirit of the audience who went on to dance the night away at Mrisho Mpoto and Oliver Mtukudzi.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Tanzanian Mrisho, even joined Oliver onstage for a song much to the delight of the crowd. Javed Jafferji’s film Journey to the State House, about the life of Zanzibarian Vice President, drew a huge crowd to the Old Fort on Sunday night, who were delighted with the presence and speech by the popular Hon. Seif Ali Idd. Other films on Sunday at The Old Fort included a heart-warming documentary starring a group of local boys called The Children of Ramadan by Lovinsa Kavuma. The Festival of Festivals program began with a selection of inspiring films from Australia at the House of Wonders, followed by Bran Nue Day at The Old Fort</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Community outreach is an important part of ZIFF as demonstrated by the Women and Children’s Panorama programs. ZIFF in collaboration with FHI (Family Health International) hosted a conference on June 19 in StoneTown on HIV/AWARENESS & PREVENTION. The conference attracted over 140 attendees comprised of men, women, teens and children; and was a successful public dialogue on subjects such as differences in HIV/AIDS transmission between men and women, sexual practices and conduct; as well as some spontaneous performances, often hilarious, from the audience. Other FHI workshops will be conducted in villages throughout Zanzibar, with the TTFF (Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival) docudrama'Positive & Pregnant' from June 21-25.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Festivities continue all week until 26th June, with free daytime film screenings for locals, an amazing workshop program, more great music  and daily press conferences at 3pm. Filamu inasherehekea dhamira yake binafsi na ushirikishaji wake katika kuleta amani Zanzibar, na mtumishi kama kifungua macho kwa wale wasiokua na historia ya siasa za Tanzania na Zanzibar. Ingawa mada kujadiliwa ndani ya filamu ni ya kisiasa, mtayarishaji wa filamu hii na mkurugenzi, Javed Jafferji, anasisitiza kuwa lengo kuu sio la kisiasa zaidi, bali kua ni "sherehe ya maisha ya mtu mmoja wa kipekee na mapambano, na mkazo juu ya umuhimu wa amani katika visiwa vya Zanzibar. UNAIDS welcomes new UN Security Council

<div style="text-align: justify;">The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) welcomes a new United Nations (UN) Security Council resolution on HIV which has been adopted at the UN Security Council in New York. The resolution calls for increased efforts by UN Member States to address HIV in peacekeeping missions. It also calls for HIV prevention efforts among uniformed services to be aligned with efforts to end sexual violence in conflict and post-conflict settings. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;">"The Security Council has made major strides in addressing sexual violence in conflict. But rape is still a weapon of choice. This is an atrocious human rights violation and a public health threat,” said United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. “I urge all Member States to link efforts to combat HIV with our campaigns against sexual violence and for the rights of women."</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The resolution builds on the previous UN Security Council resolution 1308, which was adopted in 2000. The new resolution calls on the United Nations and UN Member States to bolster global and regional partnerships and integrate comprehensive HIV programmes into efforts to prevent conflict, ensure security and build peace.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">“Global, national and personal insecurity undermine efforts to prevent new HIV infections and increase access to HIV services for both peacekeepers and civilians,” said the President of Gabon, Ali Bongo Ondimba. “This resolution will help to mitigate the impact of HIV among uniformed services and civilian populations affected by conflict and increase access to HIV services.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The resolution, which was tabled by Gabon, President of the Security Council for June 2011, recognises that HIV can have a uniquely devastating impact on all sectors and levels of society and that in conflict and post-conflict situations these impacts may be felt more profoundly. It also recognizes that conditions of violence and instability in conflict and post-conflict situations can exacerbate the spread of HIV because of displacement, conflict-related sexual violence and reduced access to HIV services. <br />
Since the adoption of resolution 1308 in 2000, progress has been made in addressing HIV and security. About 60% of UN Member States have integrated HIV programmes for military, police and other uniformed personnel. However the quality of programmes is variable and resources to fund the programmes are often insufficient. </div><div style="text-align: justify;">“Peacekeepers can play a leading role in HIV prevention as they secure peace around the world,” said Michel Sidibé, Executive Director of UNAIDS. “Uniformed personnel can act as agents of positive change, particularly in relation to preventing sexual violence in conflict and post-conflict situations.” </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Evidence shows that the threat AIDS poses to peace and security is far more nuanced than initially thought. Both the characteristics of conflict and the epidemic itself have evolved significantly over the past 10 years with sexual violence being increasingly used as a tactic of war. Addressing this requires a broadening and strengthening of HIV programmes for peacekeepers to ensure an effective response to HIV and sexual violence in conflict and post-conflict settings.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">“Renewed commitment around the new agenda is needed to ensure that the AIDS response effectively contributes to all UN peacekeeping efforts to ensure security and promote and build peace,” said Alain Le Roy, Under-Secretary General for United Nations Peacekeeping Operations. </div><div style="text-align: justify;">During the UN Security Council session, both the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the Executive Director of UNAIDS paid tribute to the late US Ambassador to the United Nations, Richard Holbrooke, for championing resolution 1308. In 2000, Ambassador Holbrook said, “Resolution 1308 should be well known and it should be fully implemented. It should not be the end of the process, but only a cornerstone for the future.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Reinvigorated efforts around a new HIV security agenda will be instrumental in addressing the impact of AIDS on peace and security. UNAIDS will work with member states to scale-up access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support for all uniformed services, including police, immigration, prison and the navy, to prevent HIV and end violence against women and girls. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">About 6.6 million people were receiving <a href="http://www.unaids.org/">antiretroviral </a>therapy in low- and middle-income countries at the end of 2010, a nearly 22-fold increase since 2001, according to a new report AIDS at 30: Nations at the crossroads, released today by the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).</div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;">A record 1.4 million people started lifesaving treatment in 2010—more than any year before. According to the report, at least 420 000 children were receiving antiretroviral therapy at the end of 2010, a more than 50% increase since 2008, when 275 000 children were on treatment. </div><div style="text-align: justify;">“Access to treatment will transform the AIDS response in the next decade. We must invest in accelerating access and finding new treatment options,” said Michel Sidibé, UNAIDS Executive Director. “Antiretroviral therapy is a bigger game-changer than ever before—it not only stops people from dying, but also prevents transmission of HIV to women, men and children.” </div><div style="text-align: justify;">His statement follows the recent HPTN052 trial results which found that if a person living with HIV adheres to an effective antiretroviral regimen, the risk of transmitting the virus to his or her uninfected sexual partner can be reduced by 96%. “Countries must use the best of what science can offer to stop new HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths,” said UN Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro. “We are at a turning point in the AIDS response. The goal towards achieving universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support must become a reality by 2015.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;">HIV prevention efforts showing results </div><div style="text-align: justify;">According to the report, the global rate of new HIV infections declined by nearly 25% between 2001 and 2009. In India, the rate of new HIV infections fell by more than 50% and in South Africa by more than 35%; both countries have the largest number of people living with HIV on their continents.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The report found that in the third decade of the epidemic, people were starting to adopt safer sexual behaviors, reflecting the impact of HIV prevention and awareness efforts. However, there are still important gaps. Young men are more likely to be informed about HIV prevention than young women. Recent Demographic Health Surveys found that an estimated 74% of young men know that condoms are effective in preventing HIV infection, compared to just 49% of young women.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">In recent years, there has been significant progress in preventing new HIV infections among children as increasing numbers of pregnant women living with HIV have gained access to antiretroviral prophylaxis during pregnancy, delivery and breastfeeding. The number of children newly infected with HIV in 2009 was 26% lower than in 2001. </div><div style="text-align: justify;">About 115 low- and middle-income countries are providing optimal treatment regimens for pregnant women living with HIV as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). There are 31 countries that still use sub-optimal regimens in many of their HIV prevention programs. UNAIDS urges all countries using sub-optimal regimens to revise their treatment guidelines and make the transition to optimal WHO recommended <span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">regimens</span></div>

Tanzania, India Set to Put up Modern Heart Hospital in Dar

<span style="font-size: small;"> <div style="text-align: justify;">Tanzania and India on 27th May 2011, signed an agreement for construction of an ultra-modern heart specialty hospital in Dar es Salaam. The hospital will be constructed at the University of Dar es Salaam near Mlimani City. The agreement signed in Dar es Salaam by President Kikwete and visiting Indian Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh. The construction would be undertaken jointly by Apollo Hospitals Enterprises Limited of India on the Indian side and the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare on the Tanzanian side. Apart from heart related diseases, the hospital will be curing patients with neurosurgical, kidney and cancer diseases. India has so far trained 29 medical practitioners from Tanzania who are now able to perform open heart surgeries, and that they had so far succeeded in 155 cases. India also pledged to provide USD 190 million for water and capacity building projects. President Kikwete hailed the bilateral cooperation between Tanzania and India which, he said, had resulted in increased trade volume which currently stood at 1.1bn/- while the Indian investment in Tanzania was 1.3bn/-. </div></span>

<div style="text-align: justify;">Anti-tobacco activists and some members of Parliament have voiced grave concern over massive consumption of tobacco-related products, increased child labour on tobacco farms and poor enforcement of tobacco control laws in the country.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;">They said if left unchecked, the trend could subject Tanzanians to serious health and environmental threats.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Activists under the umbrella of Tanzania Tobacco Control Forum have released shocking findings of a recent research which showed an alarming trend in the use of child labour, human trafficking and slavery in the country’s tobacco farming.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">“Illegal trade (trafficking in children for tobacco farming)…it’s disheartening…it’s disappointing. The concerned authorities are silent,” said Lutgard Kagaruki, the forum's executive director yesterday.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">On Saturday, the country’s anti-tobacco lobby organized a special seminar for members of Parliament to educate them on the magnitude of tobacco consumption and farming on peoples’ health, the environment and the country’s future.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">“Apart from tobacco being a major cause of many diseases, tobacco farming has a negative impact on the environment,” she told a news conference yesterday, noting that research conducted by the forum in Tabora region, the leader in tobacco farming, revealed that 139,269 cubic metres of trees were cut for the purpose of curing tobacco, with an economic cost of 16.7bn/-, while the cost of replacing the trees was 3.1bn/-.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">She said many children were illegally being trafficked from as far as neighbouring Burundi, Kagera and Kigoma regions and other parts of Tanzanians to Tabora where they were forced to work as labourers on tobacco plantations.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">“Out of these children, our research spotted about ten students. They were taken by agents from home and promised hefty salaries (between 200,000/- and 300,000/- monthly) as domestic workers. However, when they reach there, the agents sell the children to owners of tobacco plantations with prices ranging from 80,000/= to 100,000/= per head, who use them as plantation labourers,” noted the TTCF director.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">According to Kagaruki, approximately 11 per cent of Tanzanians smoke, and thus end up contracting diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and increased risk of tuberculosis (TB).</div><div style="text-align: justify;">She added that approximately 38,000 to 42,000 new cases of cancer occurs annually in Tanzania as a direct result of tobacco use.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Evan Blecher, an economist from the International Tobacco Control Research American Cancer Society, proposed to the Tanzanian government to impose higher taxes on tobacco products as a strategy to reduce their consumption and increase revenue.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">“An increase in tobacco taxes by 10 per cent, more than inflation over the next five years, will help to reduce consumption by between 8.4 per cent and 13.1 per cent over the next five years,” he said during the TTCF seminar.SOURCE: THE GUARDIAN </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

It was rebuilt a few years later and it is still standing today. The last of three cinemas on the island, ‘Cine Afrique’, was recently closed and converted into a supermarket. It is now said the remains of the Majestic are due to be renovated and turned into an office block for civil servants. All over Tanzania, since the economic collapse of the 1980s, cinemas have closed. The world renowned Documentary Filmmaker Nick Broomfield has called for East Africa’s first cinema to be refurbished and turned into a fully functioning venue ahead of his visit to the Zanzibar International Film Festival (<a href="http://www.ziff.or.tz/">ZIFF</a>) 18th-26th June. <div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The Director known for such films as Biggie&Tupac (2002) and The Battle For Haiditha (2009) lent his support to a proposal for ZIFF to re-open The Majestic Cinema in conjunction with the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA).</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Zanzibaris have been without a permanent cinema since ‘Cine Afrique’ was recently closed and converted into a supermarket. ZIFF have drawn up the proposals and are looking for support locally and internationally to begin the development of a permanent cinema and cultural centre that would bring the power of cinema back to the people Zanzibar.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">“The campaign to re-open the Majestic is a way of affirming ones belief in Zanzibar and Stone town – there will be big events where we will need a cinema, we can have an audience, we can have a film society. It's an investment and a statement for the future, which is very healthy.” said Nick Broomfield.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The proposal put forward by the ZIFF Board of Directors, who have been in discussions with SUZA, envisage the redevelopment of the derelict Majestic site into a 200 seat minimum, multipurpose venue with space for corporate events, seminars and workshops along with a café.“Even though there is no roof on the cinema at the moment, locals often set up a projector of their own and show things even if it rains on their heads.” Broomfield remarks “They are doing it because it's a place where they can all get together for a shared experience and have a chat about it afterwards. Cinemas can be very much part of a neighbourhood and part of the community.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Broomfield is coming to the Festival where he’ll be giving a workshop before arriving in Mwanza, Tanzania, where he is shooting a film adaptation of the novel The Catastrophist with Co-Producers Donall McCusker (The Hurt Locker) and Paul Miller (Prozac Nation).</div><div style="text-align: justify;">“I spent quite a lot of time visiting different countries to find locations and really felt that Mwanza had the best location.
