The Novartis Malaria Initiative has provided more than 600 million antimalarial treatments, without profit, to more than 60 malaria-endemic countries. In addition, SMS for Life has reduced wait times and stock-outs for antimalarial medicines from three months to a few days and from 79% to less than 26% in three districts in Tanzania.<br /><br />“Novartis is taking an outcomes approach, looking beyond therapeutic solutions to a focus on new technologies, new commercial models, education and training,” says Joseph Jimenez, Chief Executive Officer of Novartis, who will open the event. “As the continent increasingly grapples with the dual healthcare burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases, we believe we can make a significant difference in improving lives as the demand for healthcare rises.”   <br /><br />Africa faces immense challenges in its efforts to provide adequate healthcare to its people. Schneider Electric invites African students to take part in the Go Green in the City global business case challenge

Dates for New York Forum Africa 2014 announced; Theme will be the transformation of a continent

Transformational Fishing Project for launch in Zanzibar

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /><span style="font-size: large;">A dynamic, visionary and transformational project is set for launching in Zanzibar, that seeks to economically change the lives of Zanzibari fishermen for the better and improve the archipelago’s Eco-marine tourism fortunate.<br /><br />Aptly named “Nautilus Fishing Project – Zanzibar Archipelago” , it is about making the isles the most Eco sustainable fishing industry in the Indian Ocean islands.<br /><br />A statement issued on Sunday 1st December 2013 jointly by Sprinters Couriers & Logistics, a private company funding the project and Shawal Pilati, which is managing the project, notes over USD 200,000 us$ in total will be used in the one year social development venture in Zanzibar.<br /><br />The main aim of the project is to ensure fishermen in Zanzibar do their trade in the most Eco-friendly way, which is sustainable in the long run and in turn promote Eco – sustainable marine tourism activities.<br /><br />The project activities will begin in earnest on 7th December 2013. Sprinters Couriers & Logistics Managing Director Mr Salum Awadh said that activities include supporting and up grading the local small scale fishing Industry, supporting and up grading the pearl harvesting industry.<br /><br />“We will also support establishing of a Zanzibar Fisherman's Cooperative, establishment of a Fisherman's Marina and a logistic support unit for the delivery and storage of the fish,” he added.<br /><br />“We will also be honored to provide the project with the equipment and professional training plus other related services that will help local fishermen to increase their catch by using Eco fishing solution, grow their fishing business, increase their income, and ultimately improve their livelihoods,” he said.<br /><br />Shawal Pilati , the appointed project coordinator also noted that the project will involve fish data collection program, support to existing or new Eco projects, nautical educational programs and marine Eco – sustainable tourism.<br /><br />The project launch includes a takeoff of MV Zingatia, he added which will be used for adventure snorkeling diving trips, adventure snorkeling, traditional fishing and dhow sailing in the most Eco-friendly way this will raise the funds required to support the project on going.</span></div> </div>

World AIDS Day 2013 Statement by Donald Kaberuka, President of the African Development Bank Group

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Africa has made significant progress in fighting the HIV/AIDS pandemic. In the past seven years, AIDS-related deaths declined by 32%.The number of people contracting the HIV infection declined by 25% in the past 10 years. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">The rate of mother-to-child transmission of HIV has also declined from 35% in 2001 to 26% in 2010. Ten years ago, we had fewer than 50,000 people on ARV treatment; today we have over 6 million receiving treatment. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">A few years ago, Senegal and Uganda were the only success stories for their outstanding results and containment of HIV; now we have 25 countries that lowered HIV infections by more than 50%. A lot has been achieved; however, the risks are far from over. Indeed, new infections are a threat. It is time to raise, not to lower our vigilance.<br /><br />Recall, 30 years ago, when the first HIV-positive case was reported; 24 million Africans have lost their lives. Africa still bears the heaviest burden of the disease globally and accounts for 91% of the world’s children with HIV, 89% of HIV orphans and 69% of people living with HIV. Each day, 3,500 Africans die of AIDS and millions of others and their families and communities go through economic, psychological and social traumas. HIV-related stigma still hurts people, in society, in their workplaces and homes. Women in Africa are more severely affected than men. In 2012, 58% of people living with HIV were women.<br /><br />HIV/AIDS continues to have a huge detrimental impact on the most important resource of our continent: our people. It robs the continent of vitally needed skilled workers and deprives families of their incomes. It has hampered our ability to educate and build our human capital. Kenya lost an estimated 1.7% of its teachers between 2000 and 2010 due to HIV/AIDS.<br /><br />For the African Development Bank, in partnership with governments, international organizations, civil society and the private sector, the future of HIV/AIDS agenda is about ‘getting to zero’. Zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths. Getting there is not easy and the Bank aims to support African countries to, first, take ownership of the AIDS response. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">It is time for Africa to take bold steps to reduce dependence on external donors and work towards more sustainable domestic solutions. According to UNAIDS, Africa will require between US $11 billion and $12 billion for its AIDS response by 2015. Yet international funding to HIV is dwindling, putting our progress at risk.<br /><br />Second, the Bank supports African countries in increasingly applying ‘value for money’ and ‘solidarity’ principles to strengthen social systems. The way HIV resources are mobilized and spent needs to change. The vertical approach may no longer be appropriate and cost-effective in many contexts. There is a need to mainstream AIDS-related services into the general healthcare delivery systems and to support the local production of ARVs.<br /><br />Third, the Bank supports the building of inclusive health systems to fight stigma and discrimination. Let us all tackle stigma and discrimination by building a supportive and caring culture both in their communities and workplaces. We cannot leave the victims of HIV/AIDS and their families behind.<br /><br />Finally, the Bank, through its inclusive growth agenda, aims to support the reduction of women’s increased vulnerability and prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission. Addressing the gender dimension is an important priority in the response to the epidemic. Recent progress suggests that the solutions are in our hands. We can reduce gender inequalities by empowering women with information and services to prevent and treat HIV. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Strategies to counter and manage gender-based violence can be effectively included in HIV-prevention programs. Effective treatment to reduce mother-to-child HIV transmission now needs to be scaled up and made accessible to those who need them, regardless of their socioeconomic status. Training health workers to provide gender-friendly counseling and services must also be prioritized. Most importantly, we need to sensitize men and elicit their involvement to create a supportive environment for reducing women’s vulnerabilities to the epidemic.<br /><br />Getting to zero starts with us. It is time for Bank staff to take care of themselves and their families by taking advantage of HIV/AIDS services the Bank’s Medical Centre provides. These include Anonymous Voluntary Confidential Counseling and testing available to all Bank staff and their families.<br /><br />I also want to stress that the African Development Bank is a workplace of zero discrimination and that we must support each other in our communities and workplace. Our fight to get to zero is producing results. Let’s continue in order to give the next generation of Africans – our children, our sons and daughters -- an AIDS-free life ahead. Ingawa wengi wao hawasemi na matukio yaliyo mengi hayajawahi kuripotiwa katika vituo vya polisi. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">“Jeshi la polisi Tanzania limejipanga vema katika mapambano dhidi ya vitendo vya ukatili wa kijinsia na unyanyasaji wa watoto , jeshi linawahakikishia wote kuwa kila kituo cha polisi kitakuwa ni sehemu salama kwa waathirika wa vitendo hivi,” alisema Inspekta Jenerali wa Polisi, Bw Said Mwema.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Kutokana na jukumu la Polisi kushughulikia makosa ya ukatili wa kijinsia na Watoto, kila kituo cha polisi wapo askari waliopewa mafunzo maalumu ya jinsi ya kuwahudumia wahanga wa vitendo hivi kwa usiri na faragha ili kuwafanya watendewa kujisikia huru na salama wanapo toa taarifa/malalamiko yao. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">“Mume wangu alikiri kuninyanyasa na kuahidi kuacha manyanyaso hayo. Mwanahawa mama wa watoto wawili kutoka Temeke ambaye alikuwa ameolewa kwa miaka 12. Mama huyu alikuwa akinyanyaswa na mumewe ambaye aliacha kuihudumia familia hiyo ikiwa ni pamoja na kukataa kuwasomesha watoto wake ambao walilazimika kuacha shule. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Baada ya kuishi katika hali hiyo ya manyanyaso kwa takribani miaka mitano, hatimaye aliamua kuomba ushauri kutoka kwa rafiki zake na mmoja wapo alimshauri kwenda kutoa ripoti katika kituo cha polisi chang’ombe kupitia dawati la jinsia na watoto. AfDB and African Virtual University discuss benefits of e-learning

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><strong>The African Virtual University (AVU) Project very critical to the effort to improve access to higher education in Africa</strong><br />“We consider the African Virtual University (AVU) Project very critical to the effort to improve access to higher education in Africa and are pleased to learn that the deliberations on the integration of e-learning and open education into mainstream education programs was fruitful,” concluded Stefan Muller, Lead Economist of the African Development Bank’s</span><a href="http://www.afdb.org/"><span style="font-size: large;"> (AfDB</span></a><span style="font-size: large;">) East Africa Regional Resource Center (EARC) during the first international conference African Virtual University organized from November 20-22, 2013 in Nairobi.<br /><br />Under the topic “Integrating eLearning and Open Education to Increase Access to Quality Education and Training”, the conference brought together more than 100 participants including Ministries of Education and 22 universities from the Multinational AVU support project** as well as the private sector. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">The main objective of this first gathering was to discuss the future of e-learning in Africa and the role of Open Education Resources (OERs) including the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in the ICT learning revolution.<br /><br />“The conference is very timely, it is taking place at a time of ICT revolution in Africa. It is critical for the Bank to ‘seize the moment’ and ensure that regional member countries harness ICT technologies that will result not only in increased access, but also facilitate quality and relevance of education,” said Ruth Charo, Principal Social Development Specialist, AfDB EARC. “OERs, including MOOCS, have the potential to enhance access to quality education. However, certification and accreditation for the OERs has to be looked into. In all countries, especially in Africa, certification as an evidence of one having acquired training is almost mandatory. Networking and partnerships among institutions in Africa and the West will be critical to achieve this,” she added.<br /><br />In addition to OERs and MOOCs, discussion also centered on ICT infrastructure including access to e-learning and mobile learning; accreditation and quality assurance in e-learning; management of e-learning; and gender aspects in e-learning.<br /><br />Benefitting from AfDB funding, the AVU Capacity Enhancement Program (ACEP) launched a training on November 18, 2013 to equip AVU’s partner institutions with e-learning skills in areas such as ICT instructional processes, technology support and management of e-learning. AVU is also considering the delivery of the ACEP program on MOOCs. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">To this purpose, a feasibility analysis is being conducted to ensure issues such as certification and quality assurance are given the necessary attention. African insurers must address looming technology challenge

The additional challenge of getting legacy systems to provide improved risk management and mobile services, is forcing insurers to rethink their systems strategy.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.ssp-worldwide.com/Africa">Rhys Collins</a>, Head of African Operations for SSP , a leading provider of insurance technology to insurers across the continent, says modern technology overcomes these challenges, and this is increasingly drawing new players into the African insurance market.<br /><br />Both Hollard and Sanlam, for example, have had good success in Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana and Nigeria and are believed to be eyeing other opportunities across the continent.<br /><br />“The tighter regulatory and governance requirements are good for the industry,” continues Collins, “but, the flipside for insurers is that many will need to make major changes to their administration systems.”<br /><br />As well as regulatory changes, SSP says the growth in mobile is the other key trend to watch in the African insurance market. Unlike other markets, the African consumer is by-passing the desktop internet connection and going directly to hand-held devices,” says Collins. “With the likes of M-Pesa and Fundamo now household names processing billions of dollars in transactions every year, and mobile use in Africa continuing to grow at a rapid pace, insurers need to raise their game.”<br /><br />He believes that to deliver insurance products and services effectively on the ground, insurers and managing agents need a strong core insurance system and ICT infrastructure in place. ““There’s no denying that Africa has entered the age of mobile. Insurers and managing agents need to consider and embrace this and use the many advantages it offers to enhance their offering, or stand the risk of being left behind. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"> </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">To do this they need a modern, flexible insurance solution. Obviously this is easier for new start-ups, but for firms with existing legacy solutions, complex and risky transformation projects are not always popular in boardrooms. Also, Microsol use easily recyclable steel and aluminum components.<br /><br />Gilles Vermot Desroches, Senior Vice-President, Sustainability, Schneider Electric, announced: “All countries with high levels of sunshine are potential targets for marketing Microsol. However, because of its infrastructure needs, geographical location and economic models, Schneider Electric and its partners decided to focus their efforts on Africa".<br /><br />After market research, the consortium led by Schneider Electric chose Kenya as pilot country for the industrialization and commercialization of Microsol. Violence against women is not “only” a “women’s issue”: it is a priority for all men and all women who are committed to contributing to the development of their societies.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Africa knows that: its women face a terrible toll of violence. In countries affected by conflict, as many as two-thirds of women have experienced sexual or physical violence or harassment. Rape has continued to be used against women in situations of conflict on our continent, and their aftermath. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">In September 2013, I appointed a Special Envoy on Gender to be an advocate for these fundamental beliefs, and to oversee the Bank’s work in strengthening women’s legal status and property rights, and promoting their economic empowerment, especially through skills training. In July, a Bank project to support victims of gender-based violence won an international development award, for setting up service centres where women could access, free of charge, social, health, legal and economic services. Energy finds in Africa highlight shifts in sector - DHL report

This is likely to continue as many of the fastest growing economies are situated on the continent.”</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Harley does warn though that, as the easily obtainable oil reserves have been has depleted, that most of the new developments are either very remote or technically challenging, which brings issues of infrastructure, transportation and expertise to the fore.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">“Forecasts predict that conventional oil production will decline by five percent per year. Extraction from unconventional sources is more complex and relatively more expensive from a supply chain perspective. As such, customers will need complementary expertise from integrated logistics suppliers to meet the challenges of these new geographies and technologies.”</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Harley points to DHL’s recent global white paper on Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) supply chain management for energy companies, which shows the oil and gas businesses will require integrated suppliers that are able to support them with end-to-end supply chain solutions. According to the white paper, logistics suppliers need to provide a global footprint in combination with local market expertise.
