After receiving more than 560 applications from groups wishing to perform at the festival, from all over Africa and beyond, 31 groups were finally selected to perform at the ninth edition of Sauti za Busara Music Festival scheduled to take place from 8th to 12 February 2012 at the historic Old Fort in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The festival line up comprises of wide array of African music stars from Sudan, Nigeria, Cape Verde,South Africa, Congo Brazaville and several Indian ocean islands including Comoros, Madagascar and Reunion. Headline acts scheduled to perform include, Nneka (Nigeria),Tumi and The Volume( South Africa), Freddy Masamaba( Congo) and Super Mazemebe (Kenya).
Busara Xtra fringe events begin on Wednesday the 8th where Stone Town establishments open their doors and host for a variety of events, activities and entertainment. Zanzibar Town will be buzzing with shows including Nadi Ikhwan Safaa (aka Malindi Taarab), Maulidi ya Homu ya Mtendeni, Black Roots, Culture Musical Club and more in the Busara Xtra fringe programme
The festival will kick off Thursday the 9th with a carnival parade at Kisonge Park (near Michenzani Roundabout) including beni brass band, ngoma drummers, mwanandege umbrella women, stilt-walkers, capoeira, and acrobats winding through the streets of Zanzibar with fire and excitement then ending up at the Old Fort for the grand opening of the festival. The opening night will feature performances from Swahili vibes, Shirikisho sanaa, Tandaa traditional group, Wanafunzi wa SOS ( all from Zanzibar) Mkota Spirit Dancers from Pemba, Ary Morais from Cape Verde and Lady Jaydee from Tanzania .
The second night of the festival will feature stunning performances’ from possibly east African oldest renowned female music legends who have stood the test of time, Bi Kidude and Ogoya Nengo from Zanzibar and Kenya respectively. Bi Kidude the queen of uyoga will perform alongside Tausi Women taarab afterwards the queen of dodo, Ogoya Nengo will take the stage with her band. Other artists set to perform on this nite are Hanitra from Madagascar, Camirata Group from Sudan, Utamaduni JKU from Zanzibar , Kozman Ti Dalon from Reunion, Freddy Massamba and super Mazembe from Kenya.
Saturday night will see the battle of two of Tanzania most popular mchiriku stars, Seven Survivor and Jagwa Music will battle head to head and the audience will get to decide : Nani Zaidi? ( who is the best). Tunaweza Band ( Tanzania), Ndere Troupe( Uganda), Jembe culture Troupe( Tanzania), Camirata Troupe( Sudan) will also perform on this night followed by a performance by Nigerian artiste who won the 2009 MOBO award for Best African Act 2009, Nneka.
Daily screenings of African music films and video clips showcasing highlife, taarab, kuduro, hiphop, bongo flava will also be on from 7pm til midnight, In sync with the festival performances in the old fort in the adjacent amphitheatre
