The Dhow Countries Music Academy is organizing an Open Mic session for all local as well as visiting musicians who will be in Zanzibar during the Busara Music Festival which is scheduled to start on Thursday 11th February 2010.
The announcement about the event was made here today by the DCMA Artistic Director Dr. Meglena Apostolova who declared that the event shall be open to any instrumentalist or vocalist who would like to take advantage of the opportunity to perform in front of the academy’s audiences.

According to Dr. Apostolova the Open Mic aims to provide a stage for musicians who are not part of the main stage at the Busara festival the chance to perform and network with other musicians as well as students and audiences of the DCMA. The venue for the event which is scheduled to take place on February 13 and 14 will be at the Academy’s premises at the Old Customs House in Stonetown Zanzibar.

In preparation for the event, the organizers are sending out invitations to any musician who is interested to take part to register ahead of time so that they may be guaranteed a performing spot. This year’s Open Mic will be the third time that the DCMA has organized and hosted this event that has become a popular feature of the Busara-Xtra activities.

The Dhow Countries Music Academy is Tanzania ’s largest non-government cultural organization that runs a music school as well as other performing arts projects in Zanzibar . Since its establishment in 2002 the academy has registered over 900 students for its music courses, operates branches that have brought music education to residents of the rural areas, conducts music lessons in various schools as well as facilitating workshops and special training to professional musicians within the East Africa region
