The Tony Elumelu Foundation makes first grant of $150,000 toward landmark pan-African venture

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Following the convening of the African Union Heads of State Summit in Addis Ababa, the inaugural promoters’ meeting of the newly established “African Union Foundation” was held. The meeting was led by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Her Excellency Dr. Nkosazana Clarice Dlamini Zuma, who is also the founder as legal representative of the African Union.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br />Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, Chairperson of the African Union Commission presented, the objectives of the Foundation for voluntary contributions towards financing African priorities at the Headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In attendance were the Deputy Chairperson of the Commission, Mr. Erastus Mwencha, the AU Commissioners, the former Prime Minister of Jamaica, Mr. P.J. Patterson, and first members of the inaugural council and guests.<br /><br />Established by the AU Assembly in May 2013, the African Union Foundation aims to finance African priorities through voluntary contributions. The mission of the Foundation is to “mobilize resources in support of the African Union’s vision of an integrated, people-centred and prosperous Africa, at peace with itself and taking its rightful place in the world.” </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"> </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">To accomplish this mission, the Foundation will focus on five key programme areas in its first five years: 1) skills and human resource development, 2) women’s empowerment and gender equality, 3) regional integration, 4) youth development and entrepreneurship, and 5) advocacy and support for the African Union.<br /><br />“It is time for Africa to mobilize our own resources in support of our development and take charge of our own destiny,” said Chairperson Zuma. The Foundation will strive to more deeply engage Africa’s private sector, African individuals and communities, and leading African philanthropists to generate resources and provide valuable insight on ways in which their success can accelerate Africa’s development. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"> </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">The issue of domestic and alternative sources of funding has been an intrinsic element of the continent’s commitments of the Pan African values of self-determination, solidarity and self-reliance. The Copperbelt straddles the border of Northern Zambia and the Southern DRC and is amongst the richest under developed geological regions in Africa

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.grindrod.co.za/">Grindrod</a> Limited </span><span style="font-size: large;">, the JSE listed freight and logistics service provider, through its wholly owned subsidiary Grindrod Mauritius, today announced the opportunity to work with Northwest Rail Company Limited (“NWR”), to build, operate and maintain a new 590km cape gauge railway from Chingola in the heart of the old Zambian Copperbelt to the Angolan border. These exclusive rights were granted to NWR, a Zambian company, by the Government of Zambia in July 2006. The agreement signed today will enable the parties to conclude the bankable feasibility study which is currently underway.<br /> <br />The railway is to be built in two phases – Phase I extending from Chingola to the Kansanshi, Lumwana and Kalumbila mines (290 km of track), and Phase II to connect with the Benguela line on the Zambian-Angola border near Jimbe. Phase I is intended to service existing ore and finished copper traffic, and Phase II is intended to open up a direct corridor to Lobito which would allow landlocked Zambia to import oil directly from Angola, and to stimulate further mining activity in the Western Copperbelt region.<br /><br />The estimated capital cost of Phase 1 is US$ 489 million while Phase 2 of the NWR project is estimated to cost US$500 million.  <br /><br />KPMG’s Infrastructure and Major Projects team have successfully developed the project with NWR over the last twelve months and have facilitated the closure of the deal.<br /><br />Subject to the conclusion of the Phase 1 bankability feasibility study, construction is expected to commence during 2014. “I have been developing this project for a number of years and the synergies with Grindrod’s Rail businesses, makes Grindrod an ideal partner in the joint venture and means we will be able to bring this project to being in the shortest possible time”, said Honourable Enoch Kavindele, a former Vice-President of Zambia and founder/owner of NWR.<br /><br />Grindrod’s Rail division operates railways and builds, refurbishes and maintains locomotives and wagons provides rail signaling systems and constructs and maintains track infrastructure. Said James Holley, Grindrod Rail, Divisional Chief Executive, “We have spent the last few years developing our rail capabilities and growing our capacity to participate in the growth in the Africa rail sector. It has meant we are perfectly placed to take up opportunities like this on the African continent”.<br /><br />Said Dave Rennie, CEO Grindrod Freight Services –Ports & Rail, “This investment will enable Grindrod to extract synergies from our existing investments in the North South rail corridor and our port operations in Maputo, Richards Bay and Durban. We also see great potential in creating an Atlantic gateway to Central Africa through Lobito and look forward to playing our part in making this a reality with the development of Phase II”.<br /><br />The Copperbelt straddles the border of Northern Zambia and the Southern DRC and is amongst the richest under developed geological regions in Africa. Current production of copper in this area accounts for around 8% of the world’s production, and BMI International forecasts sustained growth in the Zambian copper industry at 5% per annum over the next decade.<br /><br />Said Dave Rennie, “We like the economic fundamentals of the copper market. We have previously been highly focused on the coal and iron ore markets so this gives us a good opportunity to diversify our bulk commodity mix”.<br /><br />Existing copper mines are located in the Eastern Copperbelt and are serviced by smelters located near to Chingola (Zambia) and Lubumbashi (DRC). New mine developments have started, and more are planned, in the Central and Western Copperbelt area of Zambia which need to transport ore up to 300kms for processing. Road infrastructure is poor, and the cost of road transport is becoming prohibitive. Agreements will dramatically increase capacity at the Ughelli power plant in 2014

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Transcorp Ughelli Power Ltd (TUPL), the power subsidiary of Transnational Corporation of Nigeria Plc (Transcorp), and General Electric (GE) have signed an agreement to expand the capacity of TUPL’s Ughelli power plant by1000MW over the next 3 to 5 years.<br /><br />Both parties have also signed a separate agreement to rehabilitate the damaged GT 15 turbine at the Ughelli plant, which will add 115MW to the plant’s output.<br /><br />Currently, the Transcorp Ughelli power plant generates 360MW of electricity, up from 160MW on November 1, when Transcorp took ownership of the plant. With the additional 115MW, as well as other rehabilitation works planned at the plant, output at Ughelli will increase to 700MW by December 2014.<br /><br />The Ughelli power plant is Nigeria’s largest gas-fired electricity generation asset. Purchased by Transcorp during the 2013power privatization programme, the $300 million plant is part of the $2.5 billion investment pledge made by the Chairman of Transcorp and Heirs Holdings , Tony O. Elumelu, CON, to deliver affordable, accessible power to Africa under the Power Africa Initiative. Heirs Holdings, Elumelu’s pan-African proprietary investment company, is Power Africa’s largest private sector investor and a major investor in Transcorp.<br /><br />The agreements were signed at a closed door meeting between executives of both companies, led by Elumelu and the Global Chairman of General Electric, Jeffrey Immelt. They follow a cooperation agreement executed by Transcorp and GE in 2013.<br /><br />Commenting, Elumelu said, “We are very pleased to work with GE, a proven world leader in power technology development, on the Ughelli plant expansion project. With this, we’ve taken a bold step in fulfilling our promise to Transcorp’s stakeholders and the people of Nigeria. Edinburgh Business School Celebrates Success of African Graduates

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.ebsglobal.net/africa">On the 8th February</a>, Edinburgh Business School </span><span style="font-size: large;"> will mark the achievements of its long-standing presence in Africa with a celebration event for graduates. The event will see 200 graduates from across the continent gather in Johannesburg. Edinburgh Business School has been offering executive education in Africa since 1990 and currently has 3760 students with a further 2000 alumni from its MBA programme. </span><span style="font-size: large;"><br />The event will also celebrate the first 23 graduates from the African Scholarship programme launched and funded by Edinburgh Business School in 2010. The scholarship scheme is the largest of its kind; offering 250 people in Africa a fully-funded place on the Edinburgh Business School distance learning MBA (Master of Business Administration) programme.<br /><br />The scholarship programme, which was established in 2010 by Edinburgh Business School, has enabled applicants from across Africa to gain access to advanced management skills and expertise, helping them to effect change in their organisations and communities. The flexibility of the distance learning MBA has also enabled students to continue working while they learn, implementing their new knowledge and skills in the workplace immediately.<br /><br />Professor Keith Lumsden, Academic Director of Edinburgh Business School, the Graduate School of Business of Heriot-Watt University, comments on the school’s presence in Africa and scholarship scheme: <br /><br />“Edinburgh Business School has been active in Africa for over 20 years and to celebrate this long standing relationship, we established The Africa Scholarship Programme in 2010. We are very proud to recognise and celebrate all of our graduates today. They emerge equipped with skills that will enhance not only their own lives but also the wider communities around them. All of the people we are recognising at today’s event have worked hard to secure their MBA’s and will no doubt go on to achieve great things”.<br /><br />Graduating student Simon Peter Kavuma from Uganda comments on the opportunity and the impact the MBA and The African Scholarship Programme has had on his life:<br /><br />“Receiving the scholarship was a life changing event, and it’s difficult to see how I would have studied for the MBA without it. Strangest African deliveries of 2013

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <a href="http://www.dhl.com/"><span style="font-size: large;">DHL Express</span></a><span style="font-size: large;"> recently released its annual list of quirky, strange and speedy delivery requests for 2013 which ranged from delivering nine gorillas across two continents, to transporting the Webb Ellis trophy and a specific heart internal defibrillator. In addition to these global shipments, a few more interesting packages which were delivered closer to home have come to light and are worth mentioning.</span><span style="font-size: large;"><br />According to Sumesh Rahavendra, Head of Marketing for DHL Express Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), within the SSA region there has been an increase in strange food delivery requests with each passing year. He says that it is now becoming an increasingly interesting exercise to pin-point which deliveries stand out above the rest.<br /><br />“One unique shipment to mention is a 32kg consignment of Haggis which was moved from the UK to Tanzania for an event. The Scottish delicacy was swiftly transported through customs and delivered in time for the prestigious event.”</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br />Rahavendra says that in Kenya, live human eyes are transported on a regular basis. ”Understandably, the corneas have an extremely short life span and are therefore highly perishable, which possess a significant challenge to us.<br /><br />“What adds to the complexity is the fact that the recipient is booked and prepped for surgery while the cornea is in transit. The successes of these deliveries rely on prior customs releases, dedicated delivery vehicles and a passionate team of certified international specialists on the ground. When there is no margin for error and the result could affect another person’s opportunity for sight, every stop is pulled out from pick-up to delivery.”<br /> <br />Another unusual personal delivery was for a customer who shipped his laundry from the United Kingdom to a Southern African country for dry cleaning.<br /><br />For many people, a wedding is one of the most important and special days of their life, and the price of one’s happiness on ‘the big day’ is immeasurable, says Rahavendra. “In light of this, 1.7 tons of fresh flowers were sent from Johannesburg to Douala in Cameroon for such an occasion. This personal request came from a customer whose two sons were getting married on the same day. Fast forward a few short hours, and a splendor of colour was delivered to the event in time for the all important nuptials.”<br /> <br />He says that on the conservation front, an interesting delivery in Kenya included the transport of butterfly larvae. “Any delay in the transport process would result in the premature hatching of the butterflies, from which they would not have survived. Following a similar operational process as the transport of the corneas previously mentioned, another successful, yet another unique delivery was completed.<br /><br />“From election ballots to presidential documents, DHL Express is trusted to pick up and deliver shipments as fast as possible around the world on a scheduled Express Network. The customer is at the center of everything we do and it is this customer centricity that drives us to deliver two million packages across the globe on a daily basis, no matter how unique the package might be. A just asylum policy: Refugees and their rights must be protected

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><strong>They managed to flee from Syria – but what next for the refuge-seekers? The provisions of the Geneva Convention on Refugees state that displaced persons should be able to expect a just and humane asylum policy in their neighbouring countries and in Europe, yet this promise is not always kept, and responsibilities are pushed aside.</strong></span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"><strong><br /></strong>‘I am a human being – not some number on a piece of paper.’ This is the response of Roula, a young woman from Syria who fled to Jordan with her family to escape the civil war in their homeland.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"> Oxfam asked Roula and other Syrian refugees in Jordan </span><a href="http://www.oxfam.de/informieren/syrien"><span style="font-size: large;">what it meant to be refugees</span></a><span style="font-size: large;">, and their responses drew attention to the dramatic situation. Since the war began, more than two million people have fled across Syria’s borders into neighbouring countries, and are in need of shelter, food and medical care. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">This prompted Oxfam to issue a </span><a href="http://www.oxfam.de/sites/www.oxfam.de/files/bn-moment-of-truth-syria-peace-talks-221013-en.pdf"><span style="font-size: large;">report in October 2013</span></a><span style="font-size: large;"> formulating recommendations for alleviating these hardships, addressed to the international community as well as to the Syrian government and the opposition. Besides political solutions such as immediate cessation of weapons deliveries to the warring parties, there is also an urgent need to allow humanitarian aid in the war-torn country and to provide protection for refugees.<br /><br /><strong>A fair asylum policy without borders</strong><br />Like Jordan, Syria’s neighbours Turkey and Iraq have also admitted refugees, while in Lebanon the number of Syrian refugees is meanwhile roughly equal to one quarter of Lebanon’s own population. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">The governments of these nations are expressing growing concerns for security, and fear the negative economic and social impacts of these growing throngs of refugees and their worsening distress. In order to ensure </span><a href="http://www.refworld.org/docid/5265184f4.html"><span style="font-size: large;">the international rights of the Syrian refugees as defined by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)</span></a><span style="font-size: large;">, the borders to neighbouring countries must remain open.<br /><br />At the same time, nations beyond the crisis region – in Europe and around the globe – must provide aid: for the refugees themselves as well as for the countries bordering Syria. This raises questions yet again as to asylum policy in Europe and specifically in Germany. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Are the directives and guidelines of the </span><a href="http://www.unhcr.org/protect/PROTECTION/3b66c2aa10.pdf"><span style="font-size: large;">Geneva Convention</span></a><span style="font-size: large;">, which constitute the foundation for decision-making by UNHCR, being upheld? And will the international solidarity called for by Oxfam, other refugee aid organisations and the countries bordering war-torn Syria be honoured across all borders?</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /><strong>Fleeing to Europe by deadly routes</strong><br /><br />Fleeing crises to reach Europe, particularly from African countries and across the sea, is risky. For many thousands of people, such attempts come to a deadly end, drowning when unseaworthy boats capsize. The shipwreck off the coast of the southern Italian island of Lampedusa in October 2013, which claimed the lives of more than 300 people who boarded in North Africa, has meanwhile become a symbol for the desperate plight of refugees. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Most of them have fled from war, torture, incarceration or hunger, left their families and homeland behind, and – if they survive their journey – are dependent on the protection and welfare of the EU authorities.<br /><br />Every nation in Europe has signed the Geneva Convention on Refugees and undertaken to apply all national laws and regulations relevant to ensuring the international rights of refugees. This also means that persons seeking protection are guaranteed access to fair and speedy asylum procedures, and are protected under the international </span><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-refoulement"><span style="font-size: large;">principle of non-refoulement</span></a><span style="font-size: large;"> from being returned to any country where they are threatened by persecution, torture or any other manner of inhumane treatment. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Yet, in this context as well, Lampedusa stands as an emblem for the difficulties entangling EU asylum policy. For, according to the </span><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dublin_Regulation"><span style="font-size: large;">Dublin Regulation</span></a><span style="font-size: large;">, Greece or Hungary, like Italy, are also responsible as EU external border states for ensuring proper asylum procedures for persons fleeing to Europe who arrive at their borders.<br /><br /><strong>Germany and Europe: Asylum policy under fire</strong><br />This EU Regulation (meanwhile in its ‘Dublin III’ version) has come under strong criticism among other reasons because it places the responsibility for refugees on the EU external border states. Yet, these countries are overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of applicants, posing yet another calamity that refugees must face. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">The cases of denied sea rescue, use of violence against refugees, infringement of the principle of non-refoulement and internment of asylum seekers as well as unjust and protracted asylum procedures in EU member states demonstrate that these regulations to date have led to human rights violations. In Germany, many refugees are housed in transit camps and either banned outright from taking up employment or subject to ‘inferior access to the labour market’.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"> Almost 90,000 people live in Germany under suspension of deportation, one third of whom have been living under this status for over six years – a far cry from the requirement for speedy asylum procedures.<br /><br />Refugee and human rights organisations such as </span><a href="http://www.proasyl.de/en/home/"><span style="font-size: large;">PRO ASYL</span></a><span style="font-size: large;">, the </span><a href="http://www.ecre.org/"><span style="font-size: large;">European Council on Refugees and Exiles</span></a><span style="font-size: large;"> and </span><a href="http://www.amnesty.org/"><span style="font-size: large;">Amnesty International</span></a><span style="font-size: large;"> are demanding fundamental reform of Europe’s asylum policy to provide reliable, secure regulation of the right to stay (right to residence) and fair acceptance and accommodation of refugees. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Syria is not the only situation revealing how important it is to act swiftly and as comprehensively as possible. Actions such as the German humanitarian admission program for refugees from Syria are welcome developments. Germany accepted some 6,000 Syrian refugees in 2012 under the auspices of this programme. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Moreover, some of Germany’s states have relaxed regulations governing family reunification. Yet, international comparison reveals how small in scope this step actually is. As Franziska Vilmar, asylum expert at Amnesty International in Germany, puts it: </span><a href="http://www.amnesty.de/presse/2013/9/11/amnesty-zur-ankunft-der-ersten-von-5000-syrischen-fluechtlingen-deutschland"><span style="font-size: large;">‘Amnesty is calling on the other European nations to finally accept larger numbers of refugees from Syria. It’s just not acceptable that Lebanon, a small country with 4.3 million inhabitants, is alone responsible for 700,000 refugees.’</span></a><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /><strong>Discussion within the community about refugees and asylum policy</strong><br /><br /><a href="https://www.alumniportal-deutschland.org/en/sustainability/politics/article/just-asylum-policy.html?et_cid=6&et_lid=5&et_sub=nlkw5_asylpolitik_en">How</a> in your opinion can asylum policy be improved in Germany and Europe? New campaign aims to help lift more than 85 million Africans out of poverty through targeted investment in agriculture and “enhanced CAADP” policies

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <a href="http://www.one.org/"><span style="font-size: large;">The ONE</span></a><span style="font-size: large;"> Campaign today released a new report and launched Do Agric, It Pays, a campaign calling for African governments to commit to spending at least 10% of national budgets on effective agriculture investments, through transparent and accountable budgets. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">At the heart of the Do Agric campaign is an effort to push political leaders to adopt better policies that will boost productivity, increase incomes and help lift millions of Africans out of extreme poverty.<br /><br />Nigerian singer-songwriter D’banj was on hand for the Do Agric, It Pays kick-off event in Addis Ababa today. Civil society partners at the launch included the Pan African Farmers Association (PAFO), ActionAid International, Acord International, Oxfam, East and Southern African Farmers Forum , ROPPA, Southern African Confederation of Agriculture Unions, the Africa Union Commission, Becho Welisho and the Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;">  </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <a href="http://www.one.org/doagric"><span style="font-size: large;">Campaign</span></a><span style="font-size: large;"> champions include Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, Beninois President Dr. Thomas Yayi Boni and Côte d’Ivoire footballer Yaya Touré, with Touré starring in a new ONE PSA, which debuted today on.<br /><br />The launch of Do Agric in Addis Ababa coincides with the 2014 January African Union (AU) summit, where heads of state have gathered to discuss key development challenges across the continent. The AU has declared 2014 the Year of Agriculture in Africa.<br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">“Now is the time to get our leaders to commit to a big push toward implementing effective agricultural policies, scale up public investment in agriculture and catalyze private sector participation in agriculture development,” says ONE Africa Director Dr. Sipho Moyo. “Of the more than 400 million Africans living in extreme poverty, 70% live in rural areas that depend on agriculture. Remarkably, the multiplier effect of agricultural growth in sub-Saharan Africa is estimated to be 11 times greater in reducing poverty than in other non-agriculture sectors, such as utilities and mining.(1)”</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br />D’banj said, “There are massive untapped business opportunities in agriculture that could create jobs for millions of Africans on and off the farm. I want Africans to know that farming is not only the foundation of the economy, but also that farming is cool. I believe that, if the needed attention is given to agriculture, we Africans will not only feed ourselves, but also the rest of the world.”<br /><br />“While other African leaders have made statements of good will, currently only eight countries have kept their promise to invest 10% of their national budgets in agriculture. It is therefore essential to do more, to go further. Agriculture is not only important, it is also vital. Agriculture pays,” said Yaya Touré.<br /><br />A new ONE report, called Ripe for Change: The Promise of Africa’s Agricutural Transformation, calls on African governments to implement an “enhanced CAADP” package of policies to accelerate economic development in Africa through an African-led agricultural transformation agenda steered by the AU’s own CAADP (Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme). The package of policy recommendations, which was developed after a lengthy consultation process with African farmers and farmers associations from all over the continent, includes:<br /><br />1) Make time-bound commitments to meet the Maputo pledge of spending at least 10% of national budgets on effective agriculture investments, through transparent and accountable budgets.<br />2) Eliminate the gender gap in agriculture.<br />3) Strengthen land governance and security of tenure rights.<br />4) Reduce barriers to intra-regional trade.<br />5) Increase R&D investment to at least 1% of agricultural GDP and bolster extension services.<br />6) Integrate sustainability and climate resilience into national agriculture plans.<br />7) Prioritise the reduction of post-harvest loss in national agriculture plans.<br />8) Design nutrition goals into agriculture sector strategies.<br />9) Foster an enabling environment for smallholder integration and responsible private sector investment.<br />10) Accelerate implementation of agriculture plans and ensure results for smallholder farmers.<br /><br />The report also highlights recent success stories resulting from increased agriculture investment and enhanced CAADP-style policy reforms, such as those in Ghana, Ethiopia and Burkina Faso.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"> In Ghana, agriculture is the biggest driver of poverty reduction, with initiatives such as credit reform, targeted subsidies for farmers, and new infrastructure supporting private sector investment, particularly in the cocoa sector. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Perhaps no country illustrates the opportunities that agricultural investment can unlock better than Ethiopia. Three decades after experiencing a devastating famine that captured the world’s attention, the country has boosted cereal production and emerged as a leader in agricultural innovation, with an agriculture growth rate of 7% on average since 2003. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">In Burkina Faso, the government spends 10% of its budget on agriculture, resulting in growth rates of more than 6% per year in the sector. Following reforms, cotton production has tripled, leading to export earnings of $165 million and household income growing by between 19% and 43%.<br /><br />Dr. Moyo added, “The good news is there are real success stories across the continent to build upon. These African-led successes must now be scaled, adopted and adapted across the region so that small farms can become small firms, young people can find good jobs and African economies can thrive. This virtuous cycle of agriculture-led industrialization will bring stability and prosperity across Africa. Elumelu, CON, has announced its investment in US start-up Planet Labs’ innovative satellite manufacturing technology. Heirs Holdings is the only African investor in the project, which is based in San Francisco.<br /><br />Planet Labs aims to transform the way imaging of the Earth is carried out, through the introduction of ultra-small satellites called “doves.” These “doves” circle the planet in low orbit and are significantly cheaper to produce and deploy than existing technology. Moreover, as they orbit closer to the Earth, they are able to take higher-resolution images than traditional satellites.<br /><br />Elumelu, who is Chairman of Heirs Holdings, commented, “As the only African investor in Planet Labs’ project, we are incredibly proud to have supported such an innovative and dynamic company, which has already achieved significant success.
