You may have heard that Cape Town is to host the 3rd annual African Creative Economy Conference from 6-9 October 2013. The Conference is an initiative of Arterial Network, a Pan-African network of artists, cultural activists, creative enterprises, cultural NGOs and others engaged in the creative sector on the continent. The Conference rotates from region to region - it was first held in Nairobi in December 2011, followed by the second conference in Dakar in November 2012. Cape Town is the Southern African host for 2013. The 2014 Conference will be held in Casablanca, Morocco with a Central African country playing host in 2015.
While the conference debates and shares information and theory about the African creative economy, the Parallel Programme plans to showcase creative work from the African continent, both for conference delegates, but particularly for the Cape Town, South African and international markets. The activities comprising this programme should be stand-alone activities, each being outsourced to an organisation, company or entity that has capacity and resources (or access to these) to offer a diverse and quality programme. It is also intended that many of these activities will become annual events in the life of the city.

Preference will be given to projects that best conform to, among others, the following criteria:

1. A diverse range of work from the African continent must be showcased.
2. The works themselves and the activity as whole must be excellent (organisation, management, etc).
3. The work and events of which they are part of must contribute to developing South African markets for African artists and creative work.
4. The activity must – as far as possible – be self-sustaining and/or have the capacity to generate sponsorship by the organisers of the activity.
