India, Japan Implement Economic Pact,
India and Japan have implemented a comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA), aiming to provide greater access to each other's markets and almost double the bilateral trade by 2014. The two countries had signed the CEPA Feb 16 in Tokyo and diplomatic notes were exchanged June 30. The deal would allow India to use Japanese investments, technology and management practices. Japan has scrapped import duties on 87 percent of goods that it imports from India with immediate effect while India has dropped tariffs on 17.4 percent of goods that it imports from Japan
Handicrafts Exports Up 29% in July,
Handicrafts exports jumped by about 29 per cent year-on-year to USD 155 million in July on the back of rise in demand not only from western markets, but also from new markets like Middle East and Latin America. The exports stood at USD 120 million in July last fiscal. The US and Europe together account for about 60 per cent of the country's total handicrafts shipments. During April-July 2011-12, the handicrafts exports grew by 20.5 per cent to USD 711 million year-on-year. Among items that registered the maximum growth in exports were woodwares, which increased 52.8 per cent in July, followed by shawls as artwares which rose by about 49 per cent, imitation jewellery which gained 42 per cent and miscellaneous handicrafts which rose by 32 per cent
Bank of Baroda, Andhra Bank and Indian Overseas Bank plan JV Commercial Bank in Malaysia,
A trio of Indian banks, namely Bank of Baroda, Andhra Bank and Indian Overseas Bank plans to open a new joint venture commercial bank in Malaysia. The first branch of the bank will be established in Kuala Lumpur before November this year. BOB is implementing a massive expansion programme this year. It plans to add another 500 branches to its existing network of 3,450 branches in India before the end of this fiscal. BOB has 85 branches and representative offices overseas, it plans to add another 15 branches abroad. The new branches will come up in New Zealand, Kenya, Uganda and Guyana, among other countries
