The Orange Klif digital offer starts from under US$40 (€35), inclusive of a smartphone, data, voice and text bundle, setting a new benchmark in price that will act as a major catalyst for smartphone and data adoption across the region.<br /><br />The 3G Firefox OS smartphone is exclusive to Orange and will be available from Q2 in thirteen of Orange’s markets in the region, including, but not limited to, Egypt, Senegal, Tunisia, Cameroon, Botswana, Madagascar, Mali, The Ivory Coast, Jordan, Niger, Kenya, Mauritius and Vanuatu. <br /><br />The launch of the offer follows a successful history in delivering and marketing smartphones in the region with Orange witnessing a doubling of smartphone sales in 2014, representing a 35 percent slice of total handset sales. Since launching its first smartphone in the region in 2013, Orange has sold more than a million smartphones to date, attributable to Orange’s strategy to launch the right device at the right price to the right customer. With the Orange Klif digital offer, Orange is addressing a new market segment for the first time that to date, has found access to the mobile internet unaffordable.<br /><br />Orange has also experienced a burgeoning demand for data that has seen a 44% year-on-year rise in mobile data revenues in the last quarter of 2014.<br /><br />“Although the smartphone revolution is well under way across the African continent, there remains a proportion of the population that so far has been underserved, not just because of the cost of handsets, but because of concerns about data costs. By scooping up all the costs into one, incredibly priced digital offer, we hope that critical access to the mobile internet and all the opportunities that that opens up, will be within reach of many more people,” commented Yves Maitre, Executive Vice President of Connected Objects and Partnerships, Orange. <br /><br />Affordable and predictable data costs <br /><br />The launch signals a new type of offer in the market that is typically characterised by pay-as-you-go, offering predictability of data costs through an all-inclusive tariff at a price that sets a new benchmark. Customers seeking to upgrade from 2G feature phones to 3G smartphones can enjoy the benefits of multimedia and online usage with no hidden surprises. Depending on the market, a typical data bundle will be up to 500mb per month for six months, with the opportunity to top-up when reaching the end of the bundle. However, across the participating markets customers may have access to shorter or longer data plans and also enjoy voice and text allocations, inclusive in the bundle.<br /><br />Compelling content and services <br /><br />The smartphone will also provide access to a range of compelling content, including established Orange services such as Star Africa, the entertainment portal, Orange Football Club as well as partner services like Dailymotion, the video sharing service. All-important local content, for example, the popular sports portal, Ndamli, in Senegal and Anghami, a music catalogue service providing access to millions of Arabic and international songs will be readily available. Additionally, customers will have access to the burgeoning Firefox Marketplace, providing access to thousands of apps. <br /><br />3G Orange Klif provides enviable experience to smartphone newcomers <br /><br />The Orange Klif promises an enviable introductory smartphone experience featuring the latest Firefox OS, ample screen size with its 3.5” HVGA screen and 2 mega pixel camera. They will also cooperate in structuring sukuk/debt capital market transaction opportunities, co-invest in Islamic leasing companies and support local financial institutions in Africa through the raising of capital via lines of finances. <br /><br />In addition, they will exchange information aimed at upgrading knowledge and expertise about Islamic finance, environmental assessment, project finance and advisory services. The agreement also covers exploration of opportunities for cooperation in financing projects in the construction, energy, manufacturing and leasing sectors in African countries.<br /><br />Mr. Khaled Al Aboodi, the CEO of ICD commented, “Africa and the Islamic finance industry are key strategic directions for ICD and we hope, via this partnership, we will increase our presence in the continent”. <br /><br />“We are greatly encouraged at this opportunity to collaborate with ICD in growing the African private sector. Alisema Balozi Seif. <br /><br />Alifahamisha kwamba Serikali inaamini kwamba ndani ya kipindi kifupi kijacho juhudi hizo zitaondosha changamoto inazokikabili chuo hicho ukiwemo uhaba wa madarasa . <br /><br />Alieleza kwa hatua hiyo itaipa fursa Serikali kuelekeza nguvu na macho yake katika upatikanaji wa vifaa vya kufundishia kama vbile kamera za kisasa, ujenzi wa studio zinazokwenda na wakati pamoja na ununuzi wa Kompyuta. <br /><br />Makamu wa Pili wa Rais wa Zanzibar alisema Serikali inatambua na kuthamini kwamba Taifa hupiga hatua kubwa ya maendeleo iwapo watakuwepo wataalamu wa kutosha wa kada mbali mbali. <br /><br />Alisema kuanzishwa kwa Chuo cha Habari Zanzibar kulilengwa na Serikali kutoa fursa kwa vijana kupata taaluma itakayowawezesha hapo baadaye kulisaidia Taifa lao katika kusukuma harakati za maendeleo, Uchumi na ustawi wa jamii. <br /><br />Akisoma Risala ya wahitimu hao Chuo cha Waandishi wa Habari Muhitimu Aboubakar Harith Bakari alisema wahitimu hao wameahidi kutumia vizuri kalamu zao ili lengo la taaluma waliyoipata liweze kufanikiwa. <br /><br />Aboubakar Harith alisema yapo mafanikio yanayojichomoza kwa wanafunzi wa chuo hicho wakati wanapokuwa kwenye mazoezi ya vitendo ambapo baadhi ya vituo vya Habari huonyesha ishara ya kutaka kuwaajiri kuendelea na kazi kwenye vituo hivyo. <br /><br />Hata hivyo alisema baadhi ya watendaji katika vituo wanavyofanyia mazoezi wamekuwa wakionyesha dharau kwa wanafunzi hao kiasi cha kuwakatisha tamaa ya kuendelea na mazoezi yao. <br /><br />Akizungumzia suala la ajira Aboubakar alitanabahisha kwamba ongezeko la vijana wasio na ajira litazidi kukuwa kutokana na mfumo wa sasa Taasisi za umma na hata zile binafsi kutangaza nafasi za kazi zikiainisha muhusika lazima awe na uzoefu wa kazi usiopunguwa miaka miwili. <br /><br />Alisema kuna haja ya kuzingatiwa kwa mabadiliko ya mfumo huo unanyima fursa ambayo kwao ni kikwazo kwa vile ndio kwanza wanajiandaa kuingia katika soko la ajira baada ya kumaliza mafunzo yao. <br /><br />Mapema Mkuu wa Chuo cha Habari Zanzibar Dr. Aboubakar Sheikh Rajab alisema juhudi za Uongozi wa Chuo hicho zimepelekea kuongezeka kwa idadi ya wanafunzi wanaodahiliwa kila mwaka. <br /><br />Dr. Aboubakar alisema hatua hiyo imechangia ongezeko la wanafunzi kwenye chuo hicho kwa zaidi ya mara mbili kwa mwaka jam bo ambalo limetoa faraja kwa walimu na Baraza la Chuo. <br /><br />Akitoa salamu Mwenyekiti wa Baraza la chuo cha Uandishi wa Habari Zanzibar Ndugu Chande Omar Omar ameishukuru Serikali ya Mapinduzi ya Zanzibar kwa jitihada inazochukuwa katika kuimarisha Chuo hicho. <br /><br />Nd. As a result, retailers need to ask themselves if they are ready for this ‘new’ and evolving client base. Logistically and operationally speaking, businesses will need to shift from a business-to-business approach to a more business-to-consumer approach as retailers will now have to meet the demand of transporting products to individual clients. A recent retailing study(2) conducted by Urban Studies on behalf of South African Council of Shopping Centres (SACSC), revealed that Africa and the Middle East’s share of global e-commerce in 2015 is just 2%, but that it shows high potential. This is supported by a recent report by McKinsey & Company, which revealed e-commerce could account for 10% of retail sales in Africa's largest economies by 2025. Google also predicts that a massive e-commerce market will emerge in Africa by 2017 as the continent becomes more familiar with technological advances.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">As e-commerce gains momentum, it once again highlights the potential for local retailers and entrepreneurs. A great success story is that of Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu, who founded soleRebels, a footwear company in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 2005. Within less than a decade, she has been able to grow her business from an organization of just five people, producing for her local market, to a global organization of over 300 employees with eight stand-alone stores, serving over 50 countries. The key to her success in a fiercely competitive retail environment was a combination of traditional African artisan skills and technologies, innovative use of local (often recycled) materials, personal drive and energy, and a global vision.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">“This is just one example of the many opportunities that we are seeing in the region. Historically, one complaint has been the lack of market data within Africa. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Without that insight, even companies with the right products for the right market can fail to get them in the right stores, leading to poor sales growth. By bringing together the standard macro-economic indicators with more granular consumer, retail and business data, it is possible to solve the distribution challenges that are so central to success in Africa.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Understanding the retail habits of Africa’s consumers</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Companies that understand who shops where, for what, and when can use that knowledge to inform resourcing and distribution strategies.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">For most of Africa, the percentage of sales through modern trade is still small. While international retailers are making investments in modern trade formats, traditional retail, like the kiosk and table top – a stall set up on the roadside or in a local market area to capture passing trade – is where the majority of consumer retail transactions occur. Even in South Africa, which has the most modern trade within Sub-Saharan Africa, 40 percent of sales come from traditional retailers. And while the preferred traditional retail channel varies by country (i.e. table tops, kiosks, market stalls, grocer, etc.), traditional retail outside South Africa accounts for roughly 90 percent of all consumer goods spending within the region.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">What a given retailer stocks, in what quantity, the price, the supplier and how often stocks are replenished, varies by retail format. This also influences the purpose and frequency of consumer visits. Depending on the country or urban area, consumers may shop at grocers or supermarkets less frequently because of transportation challenges, but visit local table tops daily to stock up on day-to-day items.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Understanding the willingness of Africa’s consumers to try new products is also essential. There is a strong preference amongst consumers for brands and products they know, have tried before or that have been recommended by a trusted source, but the level of openness differs by country. Nielsen analysis shows that, for example, in Nigeria consumer willingness to try new products increased to 73 percent in Q3 2014, but decreased in Ghana to 53 percent.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Identifying the right retailers</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Even with an understanding of consumer preferences and shopping behaviors in Africa, brands still have to identify the best retail outlets for a product. In fact, a small proportion of outlets can account for a disproportionate amount of sales.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">For example, Nielsen’s research and analysis of distribution and turnover of particular goods and products shows that in Lagos, laundry detergents are available for sale in 100,000 outlets, but that 80 percent of all laundry detergent sales come from 35,000 of those outlets, and a full 50 percent come from just 10,000 retail outlets.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">With this type of data, companies can not only identify the right channels, store clusters, outlets, product formats and sizes to meet the needs of Africa’s consumers, they can also optimize supply chains by improving route-to-market planning, availability, trimming waste and eliminating unnecessary costs to consumers, which can strengthen the whole market.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Creating retailer and consumer demand</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Many brands have experience working with modern retailers to develop assortment, pricing and promotion strategies that can increase demand at a given location. But applying the same approach to traditional retail won’t produce the same results. Understanding the retailer’s environment – how often certain products are replenished, how new products are selected for stocking, use of wholesalers, refrigeration capabilities, etc. – can help brands drive sales.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">The vendor makes the ultimate decision on how and when products are introduced to consumers, as well as how an item is presented and priced. In some cases, if a branded package is too expensive, the retailer may open the pack and split it up; there may be no loss in revenue to the manufacturer, but the brand identity and intention is much weaker.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">That’s why matching the flexibility of the vendor in product and pricing strategies is key to increasing demand and sales over time, such as providing branded cooler boxes to table top vendors for items that require refrigeration, or providing free samples appropriate to the time of day and the way a given outlet is used by the consumer.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">“With six of the 10 fastest growing economies in the world located in Sub-Saharan Africa, and populations that are growing in size and spending power, there is tremendous promise and opportunity for consumer brands in Africa. World Bank Approves New Financing for More Affordable Housing in Tanzania as its Cities Expand

The new financing will build on the achievements of the ongoing 2010 Housing Finance Project (HFP) and brings the total IDA investment in the project to $100 million.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">The HFP has overseen the establishment of the Tanzania Mortgage Refinancing Company (TMRC) which is playing a key role in developing the mortgage market. The Company provides long term financing to mortgage lenders which has encouraged an increasing number of banks to offer mortgages. Improved access to financing has also contributed to the growing supply of affordable housing coming onto the market. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">The project, which is being implemented by the Bank of Tanzania, is also delivering a comprehensive capacity building program on the mortgage market targeting service providers, financial intermediaries, market professionals, policy makers, regulators, government authorities, the judiciary and the general public. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">“Tanzania's rapid urbanization in recent years has underscored the urgency to improve access to finance for affordable housing,” says Philippe Dongier, World Bank Country Director for Tanzania, Burundi and Uganda. “Developing mortgage markets will make it possible for ordinary families (including those that have low incomes) to invest in their own housing as opposed to renting or building slowly over many years as and when they set aside some savings. The mortgage market will go a long way in addressing the constraints to accessing housing credit which many working urban residents face, and it will further expand the construction industry and associated jobs.”</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">The TMRC provides a critical link between investors and housing markets, ensuring the needed capital is invested in growing Tanzania’s housing resources. The company is now fully capitalized and profitable with paid-in share capital amounting to $8.8 million from its shareholders, currently consisting of 12 commercial banks.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">“TMRC has been operating for three years and already has made a large impact. The number of banks now offering mortgage loans has grown from only eight banks in 2010 to 19 in 2014 and mortgage repayment periods increased from the maximum of seven years that was previously offered to 20 years that banks offer now,” says Yoko Doi, World Bank Senior Financial Sector Specialist, who is the Task Team Leader for the HFP. “The additional IDA funds will put TMRC on a stronger path to sustainability by raising its own funding through other means, such as local bond issuance.”</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Another initiative set up under the project is the Housing Microfinance Fund (HMFF). Launching during 2015, the HMFF will provide long-term loans for lower income earners who currently lack access to housing finance either for the purchase of a home or for home improvements. The additional IDA financing will allow the HMFF to be in a position to start building microfinance institutions’ capacities to develop and administer housing microfinance products.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">The HFP is aligned with Tanzania’s five-year National Strategy for Growth and Poverty Reduction (MKUKUTA) and the Tanzania Development Vision 2025, which highlight the importance of affordable housing, access to finance, and capital market development.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">* The World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA), established in 1960, helps the world’s poorest countries by providing grants and low to zero-interest loans for projects and programs that boost economic growth, reduce poverty, and improve poor people’s lives. Mwananchi mmoja tu kati ya ishirini (6%) anafikiri kuwa wale wanaopatikana na hatia ya rushwa wanapaswa kuondolewa katika ofisi za umma, na ni mmoja tu kati ya wananchi sita (15%) anayefikiri kuwa wala rushwa wanapaswa kufungwa. Adhabu sahihi kwa wala rushwa iliyotajwa na wananchi wengi (32%) ni kufukuzwa kazi, kunyang’anywa pensheni, kunyang’anywa mafao na kulipa pesa walizofuja (30%).</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Wananchi waliulizwa pia kuhusu ufahamu wao kuhusu taasisi kuu tatu za usimamizi wa fedha. Hizi hushiriki katika mchakato wa kuandaa na baadaye kufuatilia ripoti ya mwaka ya ukaguzi wa fedha nchini Tanzania; Ofisi ya Taifa ya Ukaguzi wa Hesabu (NAOT), Kamati ya Hesabu za Serikali za Mitaa (LAAC) na Kamati ya Bunge ya Hesabu za Serikali (PAC).</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Ofisi ya Taifa ya Ukaguzi wa Hesabu ilionekana kujulikana zaidi kuliko taasisi nyingine kati ya hizi tatu. Mwananchi mmoja kati ya watatu (34%) ameshawahi kumsikia Mdhibiti na Mkaguzi Mkuu wa Hesabu za Serikali (CAG) na mmoja kati ya sita (16%) anaweza kuelezea kwa usahihi kazi zake. Kwa kamati za bunge zenye wajibu wa usimamizi wa hesabu za serikali kuu na hesabu za serikali za mitaa, takwimu ziko chini zaidi. Wananchi watatu kati ya kumi (29%) wamewahi kusikia kuhusu PAC na zaidi ya mmoja kati ya kumi (13%) anaweza kueleza kazi zake kwa usahihi, wakati mwananchi mmoja tu kati ya wanne (26%) ameshawahi kuisikia kuhusu LAAC na mmoja kati ya kumi (11%) anaweza kueleza kazi za kamati hii.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Kwa taasisi zote tatu, wananchi wana wasiwasi juu ya uwezo wa taasisi hizi kufanya kazi bila kuingiliwa, na pia hawana uhakika na mafanikio ya taasisi hizi. Chini ya mwananchi mmoja kati ya wanne anaamini taasisi hizi za usimamizi zina uhuru wa kufanya kazi zao: kuhusu CAG (25% wanaamini ana uhuru kamili), LAAC (21%) na PAC (23%) wanaamini hivyo. Hakuna mwananchi aliyeweza kutaja mafanikio yoyote halisi ya taasisi hizi tatu. Kwa mfano, chini ya 5% ya wananchi walidhani kuwa moja ya taasisi hizi imewahi kugundua kashfa za rushwa au kuwaweka hadharani viongozi wa umma wala rushwa ndani ya kipindi cha miaka mitatu iliyopita.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Wananchi wengi pia wana uhakika kuwa kuna aina nyingi za rushwa ndani ya serikali, lakini wana wasiwasi kama rushwa hizi zitatajwa kwenye ripoti ya Mdhibiti na Mkaguzi Mkuu wa Hesabu za Serikali.
