This is the second consecutive year that the company was certified as a Top Employer in Africa by the Top Employers Institute, highlighting the importance that DHL places on employee engagement and development.<br /><br />Annual international research undertaken by the Top Employers Institute recognizes leading employers around the world that provide outstanding employee conditions, nurture and develop talent throughout all levels of the organization, and strive to continuously optimize employment practices. <br /><br />DHL Express has been certified as Top Employers in twelve of their local markets including Angola, Botswana, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa and Uganda.<br /><br />Hennie Heymans, Managing Director of DHL Express Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), says these certifications reaffirm that the company is on the right track to being an Employer of Choice and a rewarding place to work. <br /><br />He explains that being an Employer of Choice is one of the Deutsche Post DHL Group’s three bottom lines, and demonstrates how seriously employee engagement and development are to the business. “Our vision is to be The Logistics Company for the World. 34% of African businesses reported losing out on deals to corrupt competitors

Companies from countries with tight enforcement report fewer losses than before from corrupt competitors. In 2006, 44% of US companies said they had lost out to corrupt competitors, compared with only 24% in 2015. These figures are echoed for Germany and the UK. 81% of respondents agree that international anti-corruption laws “improve the business environment for everyone”.<br />However, there is still more to do. The survey shows that there are still wide variations in the maturity of company programmes. In the worst case, conventional compliance approaches can increase risk because they lead to a misguided sense of complacency.<br /><br />Control Risks’ survey reveals companies are now more willing to challenge when faced with suspected corruption. 39% of companies said they would complain to a contract awarder if they felt they had lost out due to corruption (70% in South Africa), compared to just 8% of respondents in 2006. In 2006, only 6.5% of respondents said they would appeal to law-enforcement authorities, compared with 19% of global respondents in 2015, with 24% of respondents (60% in South Africa) now saying they would try to gather evidence for legal action.<br /><br />Companies feel that international anti-corruption legislation is improving the business environment. Most respondents felt these laws made it easier for good companies to operate in high-risk markets (55%) and serve as a deterrent for corrupt competitors (63%). This was particularly true of companies in developing markets. 79% of Mexicans agree or strongly agree, as well as 68% of Indonesians, 64% of Brazilians and 53% of Nigerians. In the US 54% say tough laws make it easier to operate in high risk markets, while 42% disagree.<br /><br />However, despite these positive developments, Control Risks’ survey suggests companies still need to do more. Third party risk is still relatively unrecognised. Just 58% of global respondents have procedures in place for due diligence assessments of third parties and only 43% have third-party audit rights. <br /><br />The survey also suggests companies are not setting the right incentives to deter corruption. Respondents cited the fear of negative consequences as the penalty used most commonly to deter corrupt behaviour. On the list of eight deterrents to corruption, in sixth place are company performance criteria that emphasise integrity (along with financial targets). Establishing parity between financial targets and anti-corruption targets is vital to ensuring compliance is embedded into companies’ culture.<br /><br />Commenting on the survey’s findings, Daniel Heal, Senior Managing Director East Africa at Control Risks, said:<br /><br />“Too many businesses are still losing out on good opportunities to corrupt competitors, or choosing not to take a risk on an investment or entering a new market in the first place for fear of encountering corrupt practices.<br /><br />“Companies need to find a balance and do more due diligence early on in any negotiation or market entry planning, to spot the points of light in countries that may otherwise appear as no-go areas. <br /><br />“Another concern is an overreliance on compliance. Often when organisations have comprehensive compliance processes in place, business leaders treat them as a safety net and don’t police ruthlessly enough internally. More than half of the businesses we surveyed hadn’t conducted a corruption-related investigation in two years. The Ivorian government has expressed its determination to continue improving the country's infrastructure in order to support its successful economic development.<br /><br />AFC is committed to proactively financing and managing the development of key infrastructure projects which will have a positive impact on the lives of Africans all over the continent. To date the Corporation has invested over US$2.5 billion in projects across 24 African countries and in a wide range of sectors including power, telecommunications, transport and logistics, natural resources and heavy industries.<br /><br />The construction of the Henri Konan Bedie Bridge, a landmark $365 million public private partnership, was one of the first large-scale infrastructure development projects to be undertaken by President Ouattara's government following the cessation of civil war in 2011. AFC was the mandated lead arranger for the mezzanine tranche of the financing and provided loan facilities and equity investments amounting to $55 million. The bridge, which provides quick and easy access directly into the heart of Abidjan, has dramatically reduced transportation costs by easing congestion on existing routes, improving the country's overall connectivity.<br /><br />Earlier this year AFC signed a joint development agreement with Ivoire Hydro Energy SA (IHE), an Ivorian project company, for the development of the 44MW Singrobo hydroelectric power plant (Singrobo) in Côte d'Ivoire. The new plant will be a much needed addition to the country's power grid and will accelerate regional integration by tackling West Africa's energy deficit.<br /><br />AFC has also provided financing to Societe Ivorienne de raffinage (SIR). <br /><br />Mr. Andrew Alli, Chief Executive Officer of AFC, commented on the announcement: "This is a wonderful opportunity for AFC to expand its portfolio of projects in Côte d'Ivoire and therefore play its part in accelerating the country's economic development.<br /><br />"By signing the Corporation's Instrument of Accession and Acceptance of membership, Côte d'Ivoire enables AFC to receive preferred creditor status within the country, the benefits of which would reduce our investment risk and allow us to provide more competitive financing solutions. Margaret Kenyatta, First Lady of the Republic of Kenya. “Novartis Access complements the advocacy campaign I have been undertaking together with other African First Ladies to expand access to prevention and treatment for people with chronic diseases.”<br /><br />Some 28 million people die from chronic diseases in low- and middle-income countries each year, representing 75% of such deaths globally.2 In Kenya, NCDs account for 27% of deaths, or almost 100,000 people per year.3 By 2030, NCDs are expected to contribute to more than 60% of the total national mortality.4 In July 2015, the Kenyan government launched a new strategy for the prevention, control and management of NCDs.<br /><br />“The most pressing health problems can only be solved if the public sector, civil society and the private sector work together,” said Dr. Abbas Gullet, Secretary General of the Kenya Red Cross. “Novartis is making an important contribution to fighting NCDs, but in order for Novartis Access to make a long-term impact, we need to drive it locally.”<br /><br />The Novartis Access portfolio includes patented and generic Novartis medicines. The meeting brought together a select group of private investors and members of the business community to discuss opportunities that concern the country's national strategic agenda. In all, 26 different countries attended the meeting on Wednesday, with representatives from 32 multilateral and bilateral institutions taking part in the partners' roundtable discussion on Thursday.<br /><br />Keynote speaker at the event was former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, who used the platform to urge investors to capitalise on São Tomé e Príncipe's main assets: security, peace, political stability and geographic location. In his keynote address, he drew similarities between the islands transformation agenda and Nigeria's investment and development drive when he was in office. He told delegates that: "Today, São Tomé e Príncipe is like a lion cub, but tomorrow it will be a big African Lion. So when that time comes, it will be good to have a lion for a friend".<br /><br />Prime Minister Trovoada opened the conference by saying that the exclusive event in London was designed to interact with quality players, who were flexible and global, coming from emerging markets or mature economies, and those are looking for diversification. He said that after 40 years of independence and 25 years of democracy, his country possessed a driven spirit for reforms. São Tomé e Príncipe had adopted a pragmatic decision-making approach to enable radical changes from the past decades. <br /><br />"We have a clear understanding that only the private sector can create a sustainable economy, wealth and enough jobs to secure social cohesion", he said, adding that "Governments should carefully understand the needs of the investors and allow them to benefit from continuous and updated reforms that are versatile, pragmatic and respectful of global practices". <br /><br /><br />To the development partners, he said that that his country needed the support of the international community to support the transformational agenda, but he reiterated that first and foremost, the people of São Tomé e Príncipe needed to rely on themselves and their assets. He stressed the importance of owning the economic transformation plan, in order to achieve sustainable development.<br /><br />In setting the scene, he posed some important facts and questions. The country is surrounded by the wealthiest countries in Africa, and he asked how São Tomé e Príncipe can leverage this to attract some of this wealth, either in the form of tourism or in the form of investment and business opportunity. He also asked how a country could position itself to become a trusted partner of its neighbors, as opposed to being seen as a dangerous competitor.<br /><br />He articulated the country's Transformation Agenda, explaining how it evolves around three economic pillars: 1) the deep-water trans-shipment port as a maritime hub for the Gulf of Guinea; 2) the international airport as the regional aviation hub; and 3) the "do-business-easy" legal and fiscal infrastructure in dedicated areas. Implementing the ambitious strategy has already begun with the signing of an MOU with a Chinese group to build a deep water port that would serve as a trans-shipment port to service the region. Currently much of that traffic is going through the Canary Islands. <br /><br />A private investor, Eduardo Camuno, former CEO of specialist agricultural commodities merchant, ED&F Man, described 'STeP In London' as 'a rare event' that showcased a government with a clear, reliable and long term implementation plan, and one that showed a willingness to work effectively with the private sector through dialogue and partnership on the opportunity, the risks and the remuneration<br /><br />In his presentation on Business, Fiscal and Tax Policies and their implementation, Mr Tiago Caiado Guerreiro of Caiado Guerreiro & Associates referred to São Tomé e Príncipe as 'an uncut diamond' adding that 'it is a perfect place to do business, well localized to service an extremely wealthy area and with the potential to be a Singapore, Switzerland, Luxembourg - with subtle differences, of course". It could, he said, become a 'one stop shop' for investors. <br /><br />Conveniently located between some of Africa's largest economies, notably Nigeria and Angola, São Tomé e Príncipe is Africa's second smallest country after Seychelles. It has ambitious plans as it positions itself as a hub for the Gulf of Guinea and it wants to create a logistical hub to service West and Central Africa, as well as becoming a tourist hotspot for expats working and living in the region. <br /><br />Mr Armando Cabral of McKinsey and Company gave an assessment of the island nation's potential for tourism and agriculture. In his presentation on how the private sector can be an engine for growth, he highlighted the country's potential for premium, high value, high-end tourism, in an area which is currently the 8th least visited country in the world. And they chose to recognize the project of Khedija El Madani (Tunisia), who will receive the Internet Users Award, which comes with 25,000 euros in aid from the Orange Foundation, to set up a network of “sentries” to monitor discriminatory practices against women.<br /><br />Khedija El Madani is founder and President of the Association for Equal Opportunity and Vigilance (AVEC): AVEC's objective is to ensure that men and women have equal opportunity in terms of social development, including access to education, health services and jobs.<br /><br />Nora Fitzgerald Belhacen will receive the Judges' Award, which also comes with 25,000 euros in aid from the Orange Foundation to enable women from disadvantaged neighborhoods to create their own culinary microenterprise. Nora Fitzgerald Belhacen is Founder and President of the AMAL Association for the Culinary Arts that offers training to women, which includes cooking and entrepreneurship. The purpose of the project is to make these marginalized women economically independent and self-confident.<br /><br />The three other candidates will receive 5,000 euros each from the Orange Foundation to support the deployment of their projects:<br /><br />Lily Fouad Attallah, Executive Director of the Development Association for Empowering Special Needs (DAESN) (Egypt): The NGO's objective is to train 20 substitute teachers so that girls with visual deficiencies can enter the conventional school system.<br /><br />Rocio Nieto, Founder and President of the Association for Prevention, Rehabilitation and Support to Prostitutes (APRAMP) (Spain): The Association's objective is to enable women who are victims of sexual exploitation and the slave trade to regain their freedom and dignity in training six former victims to create a local network to respond rapidly to emergency situations.<br /><br />Nour Al Emam, Member of the Board of the Arab Women Media Center (AWMC) (Jordan): The project involves the organization of a media campaign to promote gender equality and raise awareness among the Jordanian public of this cause and of women’s rights with a documentary film that will deal with topics such as women’s unemployment and the discrimination they confront in the work place.<br /><br />The awards were given out by Christine Albanel, Senior Executive Vice President of Orange and Deputy Chair of the Orange Foundation, by Jacqueline Franjou, Chair of the Women’s Forum for the Economy and Society and by Marianne Mairesse, Chief Editor of Marie Claire Magazine.<br /><br />The Women for Change Award is a joint initiative of the Orange Foundation and the Women’s Forum for Economy and Society, in partnership with Marie Claire magazine. Rufai Mohammed in a paper titled “Providing Enabling Port Infrastructure to Enhance Trade” at the just concluded two day International Seatrade and Investment Convention (ISIC) 2015, under the theme “Exploring New Trade Frontiers”.<br /><br />He reiterated that as globally accepted seaports accounts for over 80 per cent by volume of International trade and commerce, emphasising that for a seaport to be competitive, it must have a robust infrastructural base amongst other requirements.<br /><br />He argued that with the major infrastructural improvements embarked upon by the Authority in its ports and harbour in all its four pilotage districts, coupled with the impending 25 year port master plan which has reached an advanced stage, the Organisation is being positioned to properly meet the demand of all categories of port users for both imports and exports.<br /><br />Malam Habib explained that mindful of the Federal Government determination of delivering an efficient port system for the overall good of the nation’s economy, the Authority was consolidating and entrenching the gains of the port reform by facilitating and synergizing the activities of the Private Terminal Operators, Shipping Lines, Freight Forwarders and other stakeholders, as well as improving the existing port infrastructure.<br /><br />The Managing Director who enumerated a number of completed and on-going capital projects embarked upon by the Authority explained that the projects were meant to add efficiency to the nation’s seaports as well as to make the system competitive, effective and user friendly.<br /><br />“Sustained efforts at providing the enabling port infrastructure has impacted on the overall port operational efficiency”, he added.<br /><br />In his goodwill message at the opening ceremony of the convention, the Managing Director had commended the conveyors of the event, being the first of its kind in nation’s maritime industry for their fore-sight and said the event would not have come at a better than now “as the nation strives to promote export trade, in that way changing the orientation of our nations sea trade which is import dependent”.<br /><br /><br /><br />Distributed by APO (African Press Organization) on behalf of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA). </span></div> </div>

The event has been organised under the patronage of His Excellency, Denis Sassou-Nguesso, President of the Republic of the Congo.<br /><br />AFRAA regroups 45 African airline members and around a hundred industrial partners, including aircraft and engine manufacturers, consultants, and high technology service providers, as well as representatives of governments, airports and international organisations.<br /><br />The Association was created in 1964. Its mission is to encourage and support African companies as they develop their air transport services. It also aims to facilitate cooperation between African companies in order to develop interconnectivity and establish a maximum of intra-African relationships. The AFRAA General Assembly is a unique business event in Africa and it takes place every year in November. It is organised by an African airline and is attended by an average of 400 participants. This includes airline directors, chief executive officers and decision-makers on a global scale.<br /><br />During this event, participants explore the challenges of the aeronautical industry and debate on which measures to implement in order to improve air transport growth across the continent.<br /><br />Fatima Beyina-Moussa, ECAir managing director and AFRAA President, will also participate in a round table with other directors of African airlines: Mbuvi Ngunze, Kenya Airways managing director, Tewolde Gebremariam, Ethiopian Airlines president and managing director, Sherif Fathi, EgyptAir president and managing director, Abderahmane Berthe, Air Burkina managing director, Sanjeev Gahdia, Astral Aviation managing director, and Khellil Faical, Tassili Airlines managing director. <a href="http://aga47.afraa.org/index.php/programme">Assembly programme</a>.<br /><br />The AFRAA General Assembly will put the spotlight on the Republic of the Congo's aims and challenges with regard to air transport, thanks to dialogue between aeronautical experts.
