Testing for malaria reduces over prescription by over 70%

Once they performed the test, results showed that less than 60% of the patients had, in fact, malaria. The vendors usually complied with the test results, reducing over prescription of malaria drugs by 73%.<br /><br />The researchers from the Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACT) <a href="http://www.actconsortium.org/">Consortium </a> at the Ministry of Health in Uganda and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine in the UK carried out the study because up to 80% of malaria cases in Uganda are treated in the private sector. <br /><br />The private sector is a common source of treatment in many other malaria-endemic areas, especially where there is poor access to public health facilities. Patients buy antimalarial drugs in shops to medicate themselves, although malaria is not always the cause of their fever, and thus inappropriate treatment is very common.<br /><br />Prof. Anthony Mbonye from the Ugandan Ministry of Health and lead author of the study, said: “Our findings show that it is feasible to collaborate with the private health sector and introduce malaria RDTs in drug shops. The next step is to refine the strategy and understand the cost implications of scaling it up in Uganda. Our long term aim is to provide evidence to help the World Health Organization develop guidance to improve malaria treatment in the private sector.”<br /><br />Dr Sian Clarke from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, also a principal investigator in the research, said: “This study shows that RDTs can improve the use of ACTs – the most effective treatment for malaria – in drug shops, but it’s not without its challenges. These tests alone will not improve the treatment of other diseases. We now need to continue working with the Ministry of Health to investigate how to improve our approach and expand it to other common illnesses.” <br /><br />At present, drug shop vendors usually treat patients based on their signs and symptoms without testing their blood for the presence of malaria parasites, as recommended by the World Health Organization. This can result in patients with a fever being over diagnosed with malaria and purchasing an ACT which they don’t need.<br /><br />Microscopy is a method that requires laboratory equipment and qualified staff, while RDTs are alternative, simple tools that require minimal training to diagnose malaria. These rapid tests can help health workers and vendors in remote locations to prescribe the correct treatment for malaria. <br /><br />An investigation conducted alongside the trial, published in Critical Public Health, found that despite their popularity, malaria tests were not a simple fix in the private sector. Patients welcomed the RDTs as well as government involvement in improving drug shops, and vendors “felt big” and more akin to qualified health workers in the public sector for being allowed to test blood. But researchers warn that this could give a false impression of vendors’ other skills and services, and regulation by authorities is needed.<br /><br />The team have recently received a new grant to investigate the feasibility of training and equipping registered drug shops to manage three key childhood diseases: malaria, pneumonia and diarrhoea.<br /><br />The ACT Consortium is funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. <br /><br />Distributed by APO (African Press Organization) on behalf of ACT Consortium.</span></div> <span style="font-size: large;"> </span></div>

GE Announces New $14.7 million Commitments to Build Healthcare Skills and Capacity in East Africa

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Z7swHMIpC6I/VelckZTnxrI/AAAAAAAAGbs/W16DwgQtkzM/s1600/765.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Z7swHMIpC6I/VelckZTnxrI/AAAAAAAAGbs/W16DwgQtkzM/s400/765.jpg" width="400" /></a></div> <span style="font-size: large;">Rais wa Zanzibar na Mwenyekiti wa Baraza la Mapinduzi Dr. Ali Mohammed Shein amewakumbusha Wananchi wote Nchini kuelewa kwamba heshima na tabia njema iliyojengeka katika nyoyo za Watu wa Zanzibar kutokana na kupenda ufafiki, amani na utulivu ni sehemu muhimu ya utamaduni wa Wazanzibari.<br /><br />Alisema ni muhimu kwa kila Mwananchi kuhakikisha anatoa mchango wake katika kulinda, kuukuza na kuutangaza utamaduni wa Mzanzibari kwa kuzingatia mambo mazuri wanayoyapenda wananchi wenyewe.<br /><br />Dr. Ali Mohammed Shein alitoa kauli hiyo wakati akilizindua Tamasha la 20 la Utamaduni wa Mzanzibari katika Hotuba iliyosomwa kwa niaba yake na Makamu wa Pili wa Rais wa Zanzibar Balozi Seif Ali Iddi hapo katika Ukumbi wa Salama Hoteli ya Bwawani Mjini Zanzibar.<br /><br />Alisema endapo mkakati wa makusudi utawekwa wa kuwashawishi wageni kuiga mambo ya asili na utamaduni wanaoutembelea bila shaka wageni na watalii hao watavutiwa na kuyapenda na hatimae masuala hayo yatalipatia sifa Taifa hili.<br /><br />Rais wa Zanzibar Alisema kwamba Zanzibar ina Historia inayowavutia wageni mbali mbali kutokana na Utamaduni wenye mchanganyiko wa mambo mengi jambo ambalo limevipatia heshima ya pekee Visiwa vya Zanzibar.<br /><br />Alisisitiza jukumu la kila Mwananchi kushiriki kikamilifu katika kuvikataa na kuvipinga vitendo vinavyotia doa,Desturi, mila na Utamaduni ikiwa ni pamoja na vitendo vya unyanyasaji wa kijinsia ambavyo hivi sasa Serikali inaendelea na juhudi mbali mbali za kuvikomesha.<br /><br />Aidha alitoa wito kwa Wananchi waendelee kuunga mkono kampeni inayofanywa na Serikali Kuu dhidi ya unyanyasaji wa Kijinsia iliyoianzisha Tarehe 6 Disemba mwaka 2014 isemayo Zanzibar bila ya udhalilishaji wa kijinsia inawezekana.<br /><br />Dr. Shein aliipongeza Wizara ya Habari, Utamaduni, Utalii na Michezo kwa kushirikiana na Kamati Maalum ya Maandalizi na Uendeshaji wa Tamasha la Utamaduni la Mzaznzibari kwa kuongeza kasi na ubunifu katika matayarisho yake na kulifanya kuwa bora kila mwaka tokea lilipoanzishwa mwaka 1994.<br /><br />Alisema nidhahiri kuwa juhudi tiofauti zinazoendelea kuchukuliwa katika kuimarisha Tamasha hilo ni hatua muhimu katika kuendeleza mila, silka, desturi na utamaduni unatotoa fursa ya kukumbuka na kufahamu mambo yaliyokuwa yakifanywa wazee wa asili.<br /><br />Alifahamisha kwamba ni vyema waandaaji wa Tamasha la Utamaduni la Mzanzibari wakafanya juhudi za ziada katika kuwaalika wageni waliowasili Nchini kwa ajili ya Tamasha la Kimataifa la Filam la Nchi za Jahazi kama njia muhimu hya kuutangaza Utamaduni wa Zanzibar na kulipa hadhi Kimataifa Tamasha hilo.<br /><br />Rais wa Zanzibar alikelezea matarajio yake kwa waandaaji hao ia watafanya juhudi za kutosha za kuweka matangazo katika Mahoteli, Mitandao amoja na sehemu nyengine zinazopendwa na watalii ili wapate fursa za kuona na kuufahamu zaidi Utamaduni wa Mzanzibari.<br /><br />Alieleza kuwa msimu wa utalii hivi sasa umeanza, hivyo wananchi wanaweza kuyatumia Matamasha kama hayo ikiwa ni vivutio muhimu vya Utalii kama zinavyofanya Nchi mbali mbali Duniani.<br /><br />Dr. Shein alisema dhana ya Utalii kwa wote inahimiza uhusiano na ushirikiano wa kisekta kwa mujibu wa shughuli za kila mdau ili juhudi za kuutangaza utalii ziendelee kufanywa na sekta zote na faida zinazopatikana ziwafikie Wananchi wote.<br /><br />“ Wizara inayosimamia Utamaduni inapaswa kushirikiana na Wizara ya uwezeshaji ili wananchi katika makundi yote waweze kuzitumia na kunufaika na fursa zinazoweza kupatikana kwa kuwepo kwa Tamasha la aina hii “. The project also will support progress toward the Millennium Development Goals in A.C.P. countries.<br /><br />The consortium will help the African Union Commission’s Department of Infrastructure and Energy improve its sector management capacity as well as support the implementation of the Program for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA) Priority Action Plan projects. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"> </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">In addition, the consortium will strengthen the transportation pillar of the 2014-2017 Infrastructure Agenda of the Joint Africa-European Union Strategy, an initiative that outlines a long term shared vision of the future of Africa-European Union relations in a globalized world, and will promote the startup of smart corridor activities. <br /><br />“Taken together, these efforts will lower overall transportation costs and create safer, more affordable transportation facilities that will result in greater market access, socioeconomic development, welfare and regional stability,” said Pascal Houdeau, deputy general manager of operations in western and eastern Africa.<br /><br />A.C.P. is an organization created by the Georgetown Agreement in 1975. Apart from Cuba, it includes 79 African, Caribbean and Pacific state signatories to the Cotonou Agreement, also known as the "ACP-European Community Partnership Agreement,” that binds them to the European Union. Accreditation by the GCF enables AFC to access GCF’s committed capital of US$9.3 billion; a pool of funds for climate change projects to be utilized by members for on-lending, grants, lines of credit, guarantees and other fiduciary functions. <br /><br />AFC intends to use the fund’s capital to further its investment in renewable energy, a priority sector for the corporation. AFC is the lead investor in the award winning Cabeolica project, a USD90 million, 26MW landmark renewable energy wind power project in Cape Verde and the first commercial scale public private partnership wind farm in Sub-Saharan Africa providing over 20% of Cape Verde' power needs. <br /><br />The GCF, with headquarters in Songdo Republic of Korea, is a fund operating within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). GCF’s objective is to promote the paradigm shift towards low-emission and climate-resilient development pathways by providing support to developing countries to limit or reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and to adapt to the impacts of climate change, taking into account the needs of those developing countries particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change. <br /><br />Over time, the GCF is expected to become the main multilateral financing mechanism to support climate action in developing countries. With a total of 20 accredited entities, the fund is governed by a Board of 24 members and is initially supported by an Interim Secretariat.<br /><br />Andrew Alli, President & Chief Executive Officer, AFC commented on the announcement: “This is very positive news as it reinforces AFC’s status as a multilateral financial institution. Trade integration key to reduce poverty and support growth in Africa

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5CoAzdjkKUI/VdsnO1Th9iI/AAAAAAAAGZ4/84ZYaoQya0g/s1600/dhl.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="87" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5CoAzdjkKUI/VdsnO1Th9iI/AAAAAAAAGZ4/84ZYaoQya0g/s400/dhl.jpg" width="400" /></a></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Africa continues to remain vastly unexplored, and making Africa’s most remote regions accessible for trade will not only promote prosperity in those regions, but also elevate the continent’s continued growth path.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br />This is according to Charles Brewer, Managing Director of DHL Express Sub-Saharan Africa, commenting on The Role of Trade in Ending Poverty.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br />Explaining the role that international trade plays in development and poverty reduction in Africa, the report states that the value of trade is measured by the extent to which it delivers better livelihoods, measured through higher incomes, greater variety of choice and a more sustainable future, among others.<br /><br />“While countries need to continue to establish better trade relations with international partners, enabling trade routes within the continent can yield numerous benefits for the region and its people,” adds Brewer.<br /><br />Having entered the African market in 1978, when the continent was still relatively ‘unknown’, Brewer says that DHL has explored the remotest of regions in Africa and witnessed these areas transform; both economically and socially, simply due to access to new services. He points to Cape Verde, situated off the northwest coast of Africa, as a good example of this. “Cape Verde is a small country consisting of 10 islands, and as a result, the quickest and most reliable way of transporting goods to and from the country is by air.<br /><br />“Currently, there are three commercial airlines operating in the area and given that commercial airlines offer priority to passenger baggage, offloading of cargo from these planes was a regular occurrence. In order to better service the area, we introduced a DHL flight which operates between Senegal and Cape Verde weekly. This dedicated flight route provides various trade opportunities and greatly improves connectivity in the region.” <br /><br />To effectively reduce poverty, growth needs to be inclusive, and poor people aren’t often located where growth takes place. The World Bank and The World Trade Organization estimate that one billion (15%) of the world’s population remain in extreme poverty, and that of this number, 415 million are concentrated in Sub-Saharan Africa. The report states that extreme poverty in many countries is predominately a rural phenomenon, and that an estimated 75% of the extreme poor in Africa live in rural areas.<br /><br />Dr Jim Yong Kim, World Bank Group President, says that beyond expanding trade, more must be done, such as building roads that connect farmers to markets: “We must always connect the poorest to trade opportunities.” 2 <br /><br />Brewer says that connecting rural areas to trade opportunities is a key focus for DHL Express in Sub-Saharan Africa. “We have made great progress in making the global market and the world at large more accessible and connected by increasing the number of points where customers can access DHL and our global network. We now have over 4,500 retail outlets across Sub-Saharan Africa offering DHL services. This allows anyone – from a student to a small business –access over 220 countries and destinations that we serve.”<br /><br />The report paints trade as a key enabler of facilitating growth in developing countries and highlights that lower trade costs and fewer barriers between countries is vital to eliminating extreme poverty. <br /><br />“Trade plays an essential role in driving private sector-led growth and job creation and can be a powerful force in reducing poverty and increasing incomes,” says Dr Kim (World Trade Organization it to help the governments of Burkina Faso and Cote d’Ivoire reduce trade and transport transaction costs.<br /><br />“There needs to be a collaborative effort between the public and private sector to work together to ease doing business across borders. We work very closely with the government and custom authorities in each country on solutions to make doing business easier. In developing countries, mobile phones, digital devices and low-cost sensors connected to improving cellular networks are reaching previously disconnected communities with the potential to produce new insight about how people live and the challenges they face. <br /><br />“Rapid advancements in technology and open data initiatives mean more data is available now than ever before, offering significantly greater insights to improve lives through smarter development programs,” said Aaron Williams, executive vice president at RTI. “By combining our expertise in data science and development, RTI and IBM will apply the information newly at our fingertips to accelerate improvements in literacy, respond rapidly to the spread of infectious diseases, and discover and apply new innovations for improving the human condition in the developing world.” <br /><br />Big Data for Education in Mombasa County<br /><br />In one of the first joint projects, RTI and IBM are developing and testing intelligent systems for data capture and decision support to improve accountability and transparency in more than 100 schools in Mombasa County, Kenya. The project is designed to support the Kenyan Ministry of Education Science and Technology data collection initiative. <br /><br />Teachers, head teachers, school principals and administrators will be equipped with tablet devices to capture data about students, classrooms, and school resources. IBM and RTI scientists will use big data analytics and cognitive technologies to analyze the data and provide indicators that establish school profiles and progress and provide actionable recommendations about the county’s education system at a granular level. It has the potential to completely change our understanding of the situation on the ground and what needs to be done to improve it and improve the outcomes for children.”<br /><br />Achieving Sustainable Development Goals<br /><br />Applying insights and actionable evidence from data will be key to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, ambitious universal targets that will be confirmed by a United Nations Summit in September 2015. Today’s generation of young people aged 10-24 is the largest ever at 1.8 billion. 90% of those young people are living in developing countries like Tanzania. 74 million of the world’s young people are dealing with unemployment and an uncertain future. ”</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Youth unemployment remains at high levels, estimated globally at 74.5 million in 2013, with the majority of unemployed youth living in developing countries. The current unemployment rate for Zanzibari youth is 17% with young women more likely to be unemployed than young men.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">“Globally, high levels of youth unemployment are associated with a mismatch between the education system, skills needed in the labour market as well as a shortage of programmes for youth entrepreneurship”, Dr Ghirmay remarked.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Said Othman of UNICEF gave a presentation on the importance of life skills to young people's livelihood, focusing on cognitive skills, personal skills, and inter-personal skills.
