DHL plans investment of millions of Euros across Sub-Saharan Africa in 2015

However, in 2014, traditional investors refocused their attention on the continent, attracted by its strong macroeconomic growth and outlook, improving business environment, a rising consumer class, abundant natural resources and infrastructure development. These factors have resulted in global capital investment and job creation hitting an all-time high during 2014 on the continent.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Brewer says that efficient infrastructure is critical for ensuring the effective functioning of the continent. CDC announces annual results - 2014 sees total return of £420m

New analysis also showed that CDC-backed businesses contributed to the creation of nearly 1.3 million new direct and indirect jobs in 2014.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">The new findings show that businesses in CDC’s Africa and South Asia portfolio directly employed 533,000 workers and were responsible for a further 10.8 million people when indirect employment effects, such as their supply chains, wages and increased access to power and financial services were taken into account.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">2014 saw the value of the businesses in CDC’s portfolio grow, with total assets rising from £2,948m in 2013 to £3,369m in 2014. They included a 335MW electricity plant in Bangladesh, a partnership to help develop transport infrastructure across sub-Saharan Africa, and a pioneering deal (established within weeks alongside Standard Chartered) bringing critically-needed working capital to companies in Sierra Leone during the Ebola crisis.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Since 2012, CDC has evolved from providing capital solely through funds managed by third-party managers to offering a wider range of capital including the direct provision of debt and equity finance. Of the 19 new commitments made in 2014, 13 were direct equity or direct debt. CDC also changed its geographical focus in 2012, now only investing in Africa and South Asia. The 2014 results show that 70% of CDC’s portfolio is in Africa and South Asia and this will grow to 100% over the next few years.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">CDC targets a number of priority sectors, selected because of their greater capacity to create jobs. These seven sectors are agribusiness; construction; financial institutions; infrastructure; manufacturing; health and education. 85% of CDC’s new capital for Africa and South Asia in 2014 was invested in businesses in these priority sectors (2012: 53%).</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">OTHER KEY FIGURES FROM 2014 RESULTS:</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">• The companies in CDC’s Africa and South Asia portfolio paid tax worth US$2.34bn to local governments. Maximising local tax paid is another key objective of CDC’s investment strategy.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">• CDC mobilized almost US$250 million of third party private sector capital into funds it backed in 2014 alongside the US$132million it committed from its own resources.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">• CDC has 1331 companies in its portfolio across 74 countries. This is made up of investments in 164 funds, managed by 89 different fund managers, and 29 direct investments.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">• CDC’s annual investment rate varies with the quality of proposals reviewed during the period and the average size of opportunities. The investment rate in 2014 at £296.5m was relatively low in relation to £608m during 2013; the latter is expected to be closer to the average in future years.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">The CDC portfolio generated £450.9m of profit (2013: £140.9m). This represents a portfolio return of 18.0% (2013: 6.3%, 2012: 13.1%). However, the US dollar return (which reflects the denomination of most of the portfolio) was 11.4% (2013: 7.5%). Because CDC is a long term investor with returns often generated over 10 years or more, virtually all of the 2014 return reflects investment decisions taken prior to 2012, before the introduction of CDC’s new strategy. In particular, increases in value in CDC’s historic Chinese portfolio, as well as infrastructure investments in South America and Africa drove the 2014 results, in addition to exceptional currency gains. Hilton Heads Hotel Development Boom in Africa

Marriott is in third place with 6,412 rooms in its pipeline spread over 36 new properties, 22% up on 2014.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">If one creates a ranking not by number of rooms but instead by the number of hotels, Marriott would take the top spot with 36 in their pipeline, followed by Carlson Rezidor with 32 and Hilton with 29.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Best Western has 12 new hotels in its pipeline, but the average size of hotel is lower, at 93 rooms, and therefore drops out of the top ten when the pipeline is analysed by number of rooms. Both Kempinski and Fairmont focus on large, luxury hotels (Kempinski with their single brand, and Fairmont developing Raffles, Fairmont and Swissotel) and have the largest average number of rooms in the survey. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Mangalis is a new chain, launched in 2013, with its first hotel openings expected in 2015, in Conakry and Dakar. It is of note that Mangalis is achieving its very rapid growth by adopting an “asset-heavy” strategy, funding the development of nearly all of its hotels. This is in contrast with virtually every other chain in the survey, who are “asset-light”, seeking management agreements or, exceptionally, franchises and leases.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">If, instead of looking at the chains, one looks at individual brands, Carlson Rezidor’s Radisson Blu brand occupies first position in terms of the number of hotels and rooms in its development pipeline. Its sister brand, Park Inn by Radisson, is also in the top 10, whilst the Hilton brand and its “little brother”, Hilton Garden Inn, occupy second and fifth positions respectively. Marriott and Starwood each have two brands in the top ten, with Starwood achieving particularly strong growth for both brands, Sheraton and Four Points. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Marriott leads in presenting a multi-brand offer, with 10 brands available to developers, including four brands included for the first time since its acquisition of Protea last year. This multi-brand approach has become more commonplace as Africa’s markets continue to develop and become mature enough for multiple brands, catering to markets across a broad spectrum. Having led their market entry with their flagship brands, typically at the upscale level, several of the chains are now introducing their midscale and budget brands. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Kempinski has been signing the biggest deals, with an average 324 rooms per hotel, double that of Park Inn, and of all the chains in the survey has the largest hotel project in sub-Saharan Africa, the 451-room Grand Hotel Oyala Kempinski in Equatorial Guinea's future new capital, Oyala. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">The far larger average size of new hotels signed by Hilton, Kempinski and Marriott (Courtyard) is clear from Chart 5 below. Lazarus Angbazo Unveils GE’s Manufacturing Capabilities in Nigeria

This achievement comes at the culmination of 4 years of planning, capital investment and training of Nigerian personnel to establish the first of its kind capability in Nigeria. The new investment has resulted in a 40% increase of covered work shop area at Onne facility and additional permanent staff.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">This was disclosed in Lagos by the President and CEO of General Electric Nigeria Dr Lazarus Angbazo. With this development, surface well head systems used in drilling for Oil and gas on land and offshore will now be done in GE’s Oil and gas facility in Onne, Rivers state. Nigerian engineers have also been trained within and outside the country to operate these facilities.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">This development aligns with the Federal Government’s local content law and the clamour for capacity building, skill acquisition and technology transfer. However, Uzo Nwagwu says for GE, this milestone represents a lot more than complying with the laws on local content. “This is not about ticking the box on local content compliance. “It’s about localizing our people, localizing our capabilities; localizing our suppliers and localizing the training and the human capital. This is the only thing that makes sustainable business sense to support our huge investments in the country,” said Nwagwu.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">GE Oil & Gas is continuously seeking to increase the competitiveness of the solutions for the Nigerian Oil & Gas industry, the domiciling of subsea wellhead fabrication will give Nigeria based operators the opportunity to buy locally and avoid delivery related delays/save on cost while supporting the growth of the Nigerian Oil & Gas industry. With continually expanding capabilities, the site provides complete assembly, testing and life cycle service for subsea tree systems, subsea control modules, specialty connectors and pipe.
