Located in the Treichville commune at Zone 3 C, Immeuble Rive Gauche, this point of sale – which will exclusively sell products from the VMK range – marks the beginning of the Congolese company's expansion beyond its borders. The Abidjan VMK store, which will ultimately employ around 10 people, will be an addition to VMK's first-ever store in Brazzaville, which was opened in partnership with the South African operator, MTN.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">VMK plans to expand its store locations to five countries in the region by the end of the year. A second store is scheduled to open in the Ivory Coast economic capital, before the opening of three other VMK stores in Kinshasa, Douala and Dakar before the end of 2015. "My underlying ambition is to bridge the digital gap in Africa. These VMK stores are being set up to make new technologies accessible to as many people as possible," explains Vérone Mankou. "We will offer a top-of-the-range selection of products, aimed at the general public."</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">The VMK range, which also includes two smartphone models available from FCFA 11,900 and FCFA 19,900 (EUR 18 and EUR 30 respectively) has recently been enhanced by the addition of a premium model, the Elikia L. This outstanding handset, offered at FCFA 64,900 (EUR 99), comes equipped with a larger screen than its predecessor. Not only that, but VMK is getting ready to launch its second tablet in March. It will be available for less than FCFA 140,000 (EUR 210). "The opening of a store in Abidjan is an essential step in the extension of our Pan-African vision. It is here, at the crossroads of West Africa, that VMK has decided to embark upon conquering the new class of African consumers," adds Vérone Mankou.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Produced in China until now, VMK devices will shortly be assembled in the soon-to-be factory in the Republic of Congo. VMK's Chinese partner company has started training the locals who will be employed at the factory – more than 90 people in total. Over the last two months, Tanzania has witnessed two abductions of young children in the Lake Zone. In December, the abduction of a child with albinism, Pendo, left the country in shock. Despite the government’s efforts, Pendo has not been found. Now we have just witnessed the abduction and murder of a one year old, Yohana Bahati, which happened in Chato District in Geita Region on February 15. <br /><br />2. The UN is deeply concerned by the abductions and brutal attacks on these two young children. These attacks, which are often motivated by the use of body parts for ritual purposes, have claimed the lives of at least 74people with albinism in Tanzania since 2000. These attacks are accompanied by a high degree of impunity, and while Tanzania has made efforts to combat the problem, much more must be done to put an end to these heinous crimes and to protect this vulnerable segment of the population. <br /><br />3. No violence against people with albinism is justifiable. All violence can be prevented. Attacks against people with albinism can never be justified – not by culture, tradition or religion. <br /><br />4. This is a year of elections in Tanzania and, as some analysts have suggested, it could be a dangerous year for people living with albinism. We commend the government for its efforts and the support it has provided the regions impacted by these abductions and we encourage national and regional authorities to enhance their efforts to ensure the protection of human rights and full adherence to the rule of law. We wish for 2015 to be a year where all Tanzanians see their rights respect, including those with albinism. <br /><br />5. I have been in contact with the Regional Commissioner in Geita, Ms. Fatma Mwassa, who is very concerned with this recent abduction and has assured me that her administration is fully committed to addressing this abduction despite the many challenges involved. <br /><br />6. Today I have also met with the Tanzania Albinism Society (TAS) and they indicated that their main concern this year is to end violence against people with albinism (PWA). They are calling for more protection of PWAs especially this year when elections will be held in Tanzania and neighbouring countries. Under The Same Sun (UTSS) National Coordinator, Ms. Vicky Ntetema, also discussed with me her concerns and fears for 2015. People with Albinism deserve the same rights as all Tanzanian citizens. <br /><br />7. 2015 is a year in which Tanzanias will elect new leaders and vote on a proposed new Constitution; it is also a year where all the citizens of the country should feel respected and that their human rights are protected. </span></div> </div>

These scientists and researchers, will benefit from AWARD’s two-year career-development program that is focused on accelerating agricultural gains by strengthening their research and leadership skills. AWARD Fellowships are granted on the basis of each scientist’s intellectual merit, leadership capacity, and the potential of her work to improve the livelihoods of African smallholder farmers, most of whom are women.<br /><br />AWARD Fellows share a common vision: they want to translate their research and knowledge into tangible action, tangible action that will benefit smallholder farmers—especially laudable in 2015, the African Union’s Year of Women’s Empowerment and Development towards Africa’s Agenda 2063.<br /><br />“We have a long journey ahead with women still underrepresented in agricultural research and higher education in Africa. Since agriculture has the potential, as a positive driver of food security, poverty reduction, environmental sustainability and economic opportunity for Ghanaians, strong Agricultural research must be responsive to farmer’s needs. Agricultural research should also make use of cutting-edge technology like biotechnology for improved ARD” says the research technician at CSIR-Savanna Agricultural Research Institute (SARI), Ghana.<br /><br />Out of the 70 winners of this year’s fellowship, 10 had prior experience within the AWARD Fellowship as junior mentees to AWARD Fellows, with four having applied for the fellowship at least once before:<br /><br />Ngozi Edoh, a Research Scientist at the National Root Crops Research Institute Umudike in Ghana is currently focused on biosafety research and genetic improvement of root and tuber crops.<br /><br />Belinda Kaninga, a soil scientist from Zambia on the other hand is developing appropriate soil fertility technologies in order to improve agricultural production and income for smallscale farmers. Kaninga is an Agricultural Research Officer at the Zambia Agriculture Research institute.<br /><br />Crop scientist Catherine Nwokwu is currently a post-graduate student at Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki. Her vision for agricultural research and development is to develop at least five high yielding and drought tolerant rice varieties.<br /><br />Juliana Amaka Ugwu, an entomologist, is also a former AWARD junior mentee. She is on a mission to develop ecological and environmentally friendly approaches to sustainable production of fruits and vegetables in Nigeria. <div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-46xWcaVHBVc/VOCjJW3WfCI/AAAAAAAAFTw/QbAbCO1wsFU/s1600/house.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-46xWcaVHBVc/VOCjJW3WfCI/AAAAAAAAFTw/QbAbCO1wsFU/s1600/house.jpg" width="400" /></a></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Ghana’s Albert Antwi-Boasiako, Founder and Principal Consultant of cyber security firm, e-Crime Bureau Limited, will address the first meeting for 2015 of the Global Commission on Internet Governance scheduled for February 13 and 14 at Wilton Park, West Sussex in the United Kingdom at the invitation of Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International <a href="http://www.chathamhouse.org/">Affairs</a> .<br /><br />Chaired by former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, the Global Commission on Internet Governance seeks to inform concrete policy recommendations for the future of internet governance and is made of leading figures in internet evolution including Ghana’s internet pioneer and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Information Technology Agency (Ghana), Dr. Nii Narku Quaynor.<br /><br />Mr. Antwi-Boasiako is expected to speak on the evolution of cyber needs in West Africa in a session titled ‘Enabling Access’ to be chaired by Carl Bildt on February 14 as contained in the invitation letter signed by Dr Patricia Lewis, Research Director of the International Security Department at Chatham House.<br /><br />The Commission, supported by Chatham House and the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), has already met three times in Sweden, South Korea and Canada and is scheduled to meet three more times in 2015. The meetings provide a forum for the Commissioners to discuss specific, identified issues related to internet governance which will inform and contribute to a final report that will be published by Carl Bildt at the beginning of 2016. The Commission is focused on finding ways to preserve the freedom and openness of the internet while at the same time ensuring that cyber security protections are in place. <br /><br />Commenting on the invitation, Mr. Antwi Boasiako said “This gives a clear indication of Ghana’s direct involvement in global discussions on cyber governance and internet security issues and the country’s keen interest in ensuring that emerging developments are addressed locally.
