The Abidjan IP PoP will facilitate the expansion of the African IP Market

The operational launch of this facility, which is located in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, is set to enhance Internet connectivity in the sub-region by offering faster connection speeds and improved reliability for wholesale customers. Alcatel-Lucent Social Responsibility in South & East Africa

In Tanzania, they are further augmented by widespread poverty and the impact of HIV and AIDS. A total of 282 children’s homes exist and are spread all over the 21 regions of mainland Tanzania. There are 11,216 children in the 282 children’s homes out of whom 6,089 are boys and 5,127 are girls.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">69.6 percent of the children are aged between six and seventeen years. 21.6 percent of the children are under five. 9.8 percent are eighteen and above. 79 percent of the children homes are owned by CBOs, NGOs and FBOs.13 percent are owned by individuals, 4 percent by affiliated homes, 0.4 percent by government and 4 percent by families. The main factors causing children to end up in the homes include; increase of orphans, provision of shelter for street children, and sympathy of the children home’s owners.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Distinguished Participants,</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Other reasons are family poverty, child harassment, verbal and physical abuse, thrashing, parental drunkenness, family conflicts, social irresponsibility, divorces and early pregnancy.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">In both Zanzibar and the mainland the true extent of child abuse and violence does exist and increasingly it is catching headlines in the media suggesting that violence against children, sexual exploitation and abuse is a significant problem occurring at the level of home, communities and in schools. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Other problems affecting children, which call for partner’s support, include children without appropriate care, which include children living and working in the streets, orphans and the neglected and child labour. In Zanzibar, it is estimated that 9.2 per cent of the children aged between 5-17 years are likely to be involved in child labour.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">This situation demands combined efforts of the government, civil society organizations and private sector to promote a culture where children, especially orphans and most vulnerable are taken care of in loving and caring family environment.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Distinguished Participants,</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">I would like to take this opportunity to commend the contribution and significant role played by SOS Children's Villages International in helping children who are orphaned, abandoned or the neglected. For many consumers, the satisfaction from purchasing a physical product often increases significantly from the moment they unpack and begin utilising the product (i.e. such as a new technological device). However, when it comes to services that consumers utilise, the satisfaction delivered as a result of the service rarely increases to the same extent once the service experience has come to an end.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.dpdhl.com/">Gloria</a> Torres, Head of Customer Service for DHL Express Sub Saharan Africa , says that due to these lower satisfaction levels post a consumer’s experience, businesses within the service industry need to constantly look to truly exceed a customer’s expectations to peak satisfaction during the process of delivering a service, and this is often achieved through a seamless and positive customer experience.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">The recently released Global Customer Service Survey by Interactive Intelligence Group Inc. highlights the importance of a positive customer experience. It revealed that 64% of consumers would tell others when they had a positive customer service experience and that 45% of consumers tend to make purchase decisions based solely on customer service.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">“The professionalism and attitude of a company’s employees, especially in the services industry, can have a massive influence on a customer’s experience and perception of service, and in turn, how a customer promotes the company to other potential customers. Customer service therefore plays a significant role in a business’s bottom line,” says Torres.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">She adds that that the world of logistics is a key area where customer satisfaction levels need to be managed. “When a customer is paying you to deliver something within a specific timeframe, the upside, at first glance, is limited. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">You can get it there on time, in one piece. But that’s what the customer expects. Even getting it there earlier might not be welcomed. For example, if the customer is not at home or their warehouse is not yet ready to take receipt of more stock. At the same time, the potential to disappoint is huge – delivering something late, not at all, or in worse condition than when it started the journey is almost guaranteed to create immense dissatisfaction.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">“Add to this the numerous interactions a customer has with diverse interfaces in many service companies and another important dimension comes into play: human relationships. In most businesses – even in today’s digital, automated world – there are still numerous people who provide different aspects of service to the customer. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">From the account manager who makes the pitch, the booking agent who takes an order and the operational employee who delivers the service, right through to the billing department that issues the invoice and follows up on payment – every single person can impact customer service levels. It is for this reason that we at DHL see huge potential to help service companies deliver additional value beyond what a customer is paying for.”</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Torres says that there are three key areas which DHL believes are crucial to delivering service excellence:</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"> The voice of the customer: Ensuring that the voice of the customer resonates throughout the organisation is essential to great service. Initiatives, such as the Net Promoter Approach (NPA) management tool, which measures promoters and detractors among your customer base and proactively sources feedback from them, can have a huge impact in identifying areas for improvement and enabling the company to make the necessary changes to enhance their offering and continually offer better ways to deliver excellence to customers.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"> An insanely customer-centric culture: An employee who simply smiles at a customer can have a huge impact on the customer’s perception of their experience. The only way to drive this perception in the service industry is through promoting a culture that is intensely customer centric, with the customer at the forefront of every activity. Service is not just the responsibility of the customer service department. However, the customer service function, given its expertise in this area, can play a key role in focusing the whole organisation on its customers.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"> Transparent key performance indicators: While a service culture is largely an intangible thing, the “measurables” are still important. When these are set correctly, they help to focus teams on achieving a common objective, and managers to identify areas for continuous, incremental improvement. Performance indicators should also be built around service quality from the customer’s viewpoint, and they should be constantly visible to top management.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">“The service industry, despite its name, can be one of the most difficult in which to consistently deliver great customer service and to exceed customers’ expectations. Roll Back Malaria (RBM) partners launch new report and call for renewed commitment from health & development community

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">A new report highlighting the impact of malaria interventions on maternal, newborn and child health was launched today alongside the annual High-Level Segment of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in New York. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">The Contribution of Malaria Control to Maternal and Newborn Health is the latest in the Roll Back Malaria (RBM) Partnership’s Progress & Impact Series to help assess progress towards targets set out in the Global Malaria Action Plan (GMAP) and the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Co-authored by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, the report includes contributions from various Roll Back Malaria partners and shares evidence that intermittent preventive malaria treatment during pregnancy and the use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs) can reduce the risk of death to malaria within the first 28 days of life by 18%. Authors also highlight that these protective tools can decrease low birth weight deliveries by 21%. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">“Each year, there are an estimated 125 million pregnancies in areas of high malaria transmission around the world, resulting in some 83 million live births,” noted RBM’s acting Executive Director, Dr. Thomas Teuscher. “Pregnant women in malaria endemic areas have a 50% higher risk of malaria infection during pregnancy than non-pregnant women. We must do everything we can to protect these precious moments and allow all women the opportunity to safely carry and deliver their child without the risk of this killer disease.” </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Between 2009 and 2012, an estimated 94,000 newborn deaths were averted as a result of the scale-up of these malaria interventions during pregnancy. Countries attaining high coverage and use of malaria control interventions during this period saw child mortality rates fall by as much as to 20%. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Effective roll-out and use of these proven preventive measures contributes positively to the achievement of the MDGs – especially those related to maternal health improvement and reduction of under-five mortality – while also allowing progress against broader targets by contributing to a healthier and more vibrant society. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Despite these advances, malaria in pregnancy still exerts a heavy toll and contributes largely to maternal and neonatal mortality. In Africa, 10,000 women and between 75,000 and 200,000 children under the age of one are estimated to die annually as a consequence of malaria infection during pregnancy. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Malaria is a major cause of anaemia in pregnant women, and can lead to maternal death at delivery due to haemorrhage. It is also responsible for stillbirth, preterm birth, and low birth weight, which increases the risk of death within the first days of the child’s life. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">The notable results outlined in the report have been achieved with generally low levels of intervention coverage across sub-Saharan African countries, suggesting the highly effective nature of malaria prevention efforts during pregnancy and the need for greater collaboration to ensure stronger protection among this key population. Authors note that an estimated 300,000 neonatal deaths could have been averted had an 80% coverage of these interventions been achieved between 2009 and 2012. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">While launching the report in New York, RBM partners called for renewed commitment and greater collaboration between the maternal health and malaria communities to increase access to interventions and maximize the impact of efforts. With some 500 days until the 2015 deadline of the MDGs and a challenging financial landscape, continued partnership to scale-up delivery of these life-saving interventions will be critical to ensuring mothers and children are able to lead healthy lives and contribute to their communities.</span></div> </div>

World Bank Group Sets Historic New Development Financing Record for Region

Boosting access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy is a primary objective of the Bank’s work in Africa. During the fiscal year (FY14) projects focused on developing hydropower potential and providing new forms of sustainable power to increase energy production and benefit millions of Africans.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">In a major push, IBRD, IFC, and MIGA combined forces under a joint Energy Business Plan for Nigeria. The plan will support Nigeria’s energy reform program and help increase installed generation capacity by about 1,000 MW while mobilizing nearly $1.7 billion of private sector financing for Africa’s largest economy. Many projects benefit from IBRD, IFC, and MIGA working together across the World Bank Group to better leverage their development impact in the region.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">In FY14, the Bank also supported the 80-megawatt Regional Rusumo Falls Hydroelectric Project in Burundi, Rwanda, and Tanzania, and provided a $100-million grant to Burundi for the Jiji-Mulembwe hydropower project.
