Agreements will dramatically increase capacity at the Ughelli power plant in 2014

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Transcorp Ughelli Power Ltd (TUPL), the power subsidiary of Transnational Corporation of Nigeria Plc (Transcorp), and General Electric (GE) have signed an agreement to expand the capacity of TUPL’s Ughelli power plant by1000MW over the next 3 to 5 years.<br /><br />Both parties have also signed a separate agreement to rehabilitate the damaged GT 15 turbine at the Ughelli plant, which will add 115MW to the plant’s output.<br /><br />Currently, the Transcorp Ughelli power plant generates 360MW of electricity, up from 160MW on November 1, when Transcorp took ownership of the plant. With the additional 115MW, as well as other rehabilitation works planned at the plant, output at Ughelli will increase to 700MW by December 2014.<br /><br />The Ughelli power plant is Nigeria’s largest gas-fired electricity generation asset. Purchased by Transcorp during the 2013power privatization programme, the $300 million plant is part of the $2.5 billion investment pledge made by the Chairman of Transcorp and Heirs Holdings , Tony O. Elumelu, CON, to deliver affordable, accessible power to Africa under the Power Africa Initiative. Heirs Holdings, Elumelu’s pan-African proprietary investment company, is Power Africa’s largest private sector investor and a major investor in Transcorp.<br /><br />The agreements were signed at a closed door meeting between executives of both companies, led by Elumelu and the Global Chairman of General Electric, Jeffrey Immelt. They follow a cooperation agreement executed by Transcorp and GE in 2013.<br /><br />Commenting, Elumelu said, “We are very pleased to work with GE, a proven world leader in power technology development, on the Ughelli plant expansion project. With this, we’ve taken a bold step in fulfilling our promise to Transcorp’s stakeholders and the people of Nigeria. In a very short period of time, we have achieved significant impact - power production has more than doubled, and with this agreement, we will see increased output before the end of this year. We are confident that this partnership with GE will further accelerate the achievement of our goals in the power sector.”</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br />Immelt said,“ GE fully appreciates the confidence expressed by Transcorp. Edinburgh Business School Celebrates Success of African Graduates

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.ebsglobal.net/africa">On the 8th February</a>, Edinburgh Business School </span><span style="font-size: large;"> will mark the achievements of its long-standing presence in Africa with a celebration event for graduates. The event will see 200 graduates from across the continent gather in Johannesburg. Edinburgh Business School has been offering executive education in Africa since 1990 and currently has 3760 students with a further 2000 alumni from its MBA programme. </span><span style="font-size: large;"><br />The event will also celebrate the first 23 graduates from the African Scholarship programme launched and funded by Edinburgh Business School in 2010. The scholarship scheme is the largest of its kind; offering 250 people in Africa a fully-funded place on the Edinburgh Business School distance learning MBA (Master of Business Administration) programme.<br /><br />The scholarship programme, which was established in 2010 by Edinburgh Business School, has enabled applicants from across Africa to gain access to advanced management skills and expertise, helping them to effect change in their organisations and communities. The flexibility of the distance learning MBA has also enabled students to continue working while they learn, implementing their new knowledge and skills in the workplace immediately.<br /><br />Professor Keith Lumsden, Academic Director of Edinburgh Business School, the Graduate School of Business of Heriot-Watt University, comments on the school’s presence in Africa and scholarship scheme: <br /><br />“Edinburgh Business School has been active in Africa for over 20 years and to celebrate this long standing relationship, we established The Africa Scholarship Programme in 2010. We are very proud to recognise and celebrate all of our graduates today. They emerge equipped with skills that will enhance not only their own lives but also the wider communities around them. Strangest African deliveries of 2013

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <a href="http://www.dhl.com/"><span style="font-size: large;">DHL Express</span></a><span style="font-size: large;"> recently released its annual list of quirky, strange and speedy delivery requests for 2013 which ranged from delivering nine gorillas across two continents, to transporting the Webb Ellis trophy and a specific heart internal defibrillator. In addition to these global shipments, a few more interesting packages which were delivered closer to home have come to light and are worth mentioning.</span><span style="font-size: large;"><br />According to Sumesh Rahavendra, Head of Marketing for DHL Express Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), within the SSA region there has been an increase in strange food delivery requests with each passing year. He says that it is now becoming an increasingly interesting exercise to pin-point which deliveries stand out above the rest.<br /><br />“One unique shipment to mention is a 32kg consignment of Haggis which was moved from the UK to Tanzania for an event. The Scottish delicacy was swiftly transported through customs and delivered in time for the prestigious event.”</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br />Rahavendra says that in Kenya, live human eyes are transported on a regular basis. ”Understandably, the corneas have an extremely short life span and are therefore highly perishable, which possess a significant challenge to us.<br /><br />“What adds to the complexity is the fact that the recipient is booked and prepped for surgery while the cornea is in transit. The successes of these deliveries rely on prior customs releases, dedicated delivery vehicles and a passionate team of certified international specialists on the ground. When there is no margin for error and the result could affect another person’s opportunity for sight, every stop is pulled out from pick-up to delivery.”<br /> <br />Another unusual personal delivery was for a customer who shipped his laundry from the United Kingdom to a Southern African country for dry cleaning.<br /><br />For many people, a wedding is one of the most important and special days of their life, and the price of one’s happiness on ‘the big day’ is immeasurable, says Rahavendra. “In light of this, 1.7 tons of fresh flowers were sent from Johannesburg to Douala in Cameroon for such an occasion. This personal request came from a customer whose two sons were getting married on the same day. Fast forward a few short hours, and a splendor of colour was delivered to the event in time for the all important nuptials.”<br /> <br />He says that on the conservation front, an interesting delivery in Kenya included the transport of butterfly larvae. “Any delay in the transport process would result in the premature hatching of the butterflies, from which they would not have survived. Following a similar operational process as the transport of the corneas previously mentioned, another successful, yet another unique delivery was completed.<br /><br />“From election ballots to presidential documents, DHL Express is trusted to pick up and deliver shipments as fast as possible around the world on a scheduled Express Network. The customer is at the center of everything we do and it is this customer centricity that drives us to deliver two million packages across the globe on a daily basis, no matter how unique the package might be. A just asylum policy: Refugees and their rights must be protected

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><strong>They managed to flee from Syria – but what next for the refuge-seekers? The provisions of the Geneva Convention on Refugees state that displaced persons should be able to expect a just and humane asylum policy in their neighbouring countries and in Europe, yet this promise is not always kept, and responsibilities are pushed aside.</strong></span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"><strong><br /></strong>‘I am a human being – not some number on a piece of paper.’ This is the response of Roula, a young woman from Syria who fled to Jordan with her family to escape the civil war in their homeland.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"> Oxfam asked Roula and other Syrian refugees in Jordan </span><a href="http://www.oxfam.de/informieren/syrien"><span style="font-size: large;">what it meant to be refugees</span></a><span style="font-size: large;">, and their responses drew attention to the dramatic situation. Since the war began, more than two million people have fled across Syria’s borders into neighbouring countries, and are in need of shelter, food and medical care. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">This prompted Oxfam to issue a </span><a href="http://www.oxfam.de/sites/www.oxfam.de/files/bn-moment-of-truth-syria-peace-talks-221013-en.pdf"><span style="font-size: large;">report in October 2013</span></a><span style="font-size: large;"> formulating recommendations for alleviating these hardships, addressed to the international community as well as to the Syrian government and the opposition. Besides political solutions such as immediate cessation of weapons deliveries to the warring parties, there is also an urgent need to allow humanitarian aid in the war-torn country and to provide protection for refugees.<br /><br /><strong>A fair asylum policy without borders</strong><br />Like Jordan, Syria’s neighbours Turkey and Iraq have also admitted refugees, while in Lebanon the number of Syrian refugees is meanwhile roughly equal to one quarter of Lebanon’s own population. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">The governments of these nations are expressing growing concerns for security, and fear the negative economic and social impacts of these growing throngs of refugees and their worsening distress. In order to ensure </span><a href="http://www.refworld.org/docid/5265184f4.html"><span style="font-size: large;">the international rights of the Syrian refugees as defined by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)</span></a><span style="font-size: large;">, the borders to neighbouring countries must remain open.<br /><br />At the same time, nations beyond the crisis region – in Europe and around the globe – must provide aid: for the refugees themselves as well as for the countries bordering Syria. This raises questions yet again as to asylum policy in Europe and specifically in Germany. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Are the directives and guidelines of the </span><a href="http://www.unhcr.org/protect/PROTECTION/3b66c2aa10.pdf"><span style="font-size: large;">Geneva Convention</span></a><span style="font-size: large;">, which constitute the foundation for decision-making by UNHCR, being upheld? And will the international solidarity called for by Oxfam, other refugee aid organisations and the countries bordering war-torn Syria be honoured across all borders?</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /><strong>Fleeing to Europe by deadly routes</strong><br /><br />Fleeing crises to reach Europe, particularly from African countries and across the sea, is risky. For many thousands of people, such attempts come to a deadly end, drowning when unseaworthy boats capsize. The shipwreck off the coast of the southern Italian island of Lampedusa in October 2013, which claimed the lives of more than 300 people who boarded in North Africa, has meanwhile become a symbol for the desperate plight of refugees. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Most of them have fled from war, torture, incarceration or hunger, left their families and homeland behind, and – if they survive their journey – are dependent on the protection and welfare of the EU authorities.<br /><br />Every nation in Europe has signed the Geneva Convention on Refugees and undertaken to apply all national laws and regulations relevant to ensuring the international rights of refugees. This also means that persons seeking protection are guaranteed access to fair and speedy asylum procedures, and are protected under the international </span><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-refoulement"><span style="font-size: large;">principle of non-refoulement</span></a><span style="font-size: large;"> from being returned to any country where they are threatened by persecution, torture or any other manner of inhumane treatment. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Yet, in this context as well, Lampedusa stands as an emblem for the difficulties entangling EU asylum policy. For, according to the </span><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dublin_Regulation"><span style="font-size: large;">Dublin Regulation</span></a><span style="font-size: large;">, Greece or Hungary, like Italy, are also responsible as EU external border states for ensuring proper asylum procedures for persons fleeing to Europe who arrive at their borders.<br /><br /><strong>Germany and Europe: Asylum policy under fire</strong><br />This EU Regulation (meanwhile in its ‘Dublin III’ version) has come under strong criticism among other reasons because it places the responsibility for refugees on the EU external border states. Yet, these countries are overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of applicants, posing yet another calamity that refugees must face. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">The cases of denied sea rescue, use of violence against refugees, infringement of the principle of non-refoulement and internment of asylum seekers as well as unjust and protracted asylum procedures in EU member states demonstrate that these regulations to date have led to human rights violations. In Germany, many refugees are housed in transit camps and either banned outright from taking up employment or subject to ‘inferior access to the labour market’.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"> Almost 90,000 people live in Germany under suspension of deportation, one third of whom have been living under this status for over six years – a far cry from the requirement for speedy asylum procedures.<br /><br />Refugee and human rights organisations such as </span><a href="http://www.proasyl.de/en/home/"><span style="font-size: large;">PRO ASYL</span></a><span style="font-size: large;">, the </span><a href="http://www.ecre.org/"><span style="font-size: large;">European Council on Refugees and Exiles</span></a><span style="font-size: large;"> and </span><a href="http://www.amnesty.org/"><span style="font-size: large;">Amnesty International</span></a><span style="font-size: large;"> are demanding fundamental reform of Europe’s asylum policy to provide reliable, secure regulation of the right to stay (right to residence) and fair acceptance and accommodation of refugees. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Syria is not the only situation revealing how important it is to act swiftly and as comprehensively as possible. Actions such as the German humanitarian admission program for refugees from Syria are welcome developments. Germany accepted some 6,000 Syrian refugees in 2012 under the auspices of this programme. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Moreover, some of Germany’s states have relaxed regulations governing family reunification. Yet, international comparison reveals how small in scope this step actually is. As Franziska Vilmar, asylum expert at Amnesty International in Germany, puts it: </span><a href="http://www.amnesty.de/presse/2013/9/11/amnesty-zur-ankunft-der-ersten-von-5000-syrischen-fluechtlingen-deutschland"><span style="font-size: large;">‘Amnesty is calling on the other European nations to finally accept larger numbers of refugees from Syria. It’s just not acceptable that Lebanon, a small country with 4.3 million inhabitants, is alone responsible for 700,000 refugees.’</span></a><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /><strong>Discussion within the community about refugees and asylum policy</strong><br /><br /><a href="https://www.alumniportal-deutschland.org/en/sustainability/politics/article/just-asylum-policy.html?et_cid=6&et_lid=5&et_sub=nlkw5_asylpolitik_en">How</a> in your opinion can asylum policy be improved in Germany and Europe? New campaign aims to help lift more than 85 million Africans out of poverty through targeted investment in agriculture and “enhanced CAADP” policies

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <a href="http://www.one.org/"><span style="font-size: large;">The ONE</span></a><span style="font-size: large;"> Campaign today released a new report and launched Do Agric, It Pays, a campaign calling for African governments to commit to spending at least 10% of national budgets on effective agriculture investments, through transparent and accountable budgets. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">At the heart of the Do Agric campaign is an effort to push political leaders to adopt better policies that will boost productivity, increase incomes and help lift millions of Africans out of extreme poverty.<br /><br />Nigerian singer-songwriter D’banj was on hand for the Do Agric, It Pays kick-off event in Addis Ababa today. Civil society partners at the launch included the Pan African Farmers Association (PAFO), ActionAid International, Acord International, Oxfam, East and Southern African Farmers Forum , ROPPA, Southern African Confederation of Agriculture Unions, the Africa Union Commission, Becho Welisho and the Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;">  </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <a href="http://www.one.org/doagric"><span style="font-size: large;">Campaign</span></a><span style="font-size: large;"> champions include Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, Beninois President Dr. Thomas Yayi Boni and Côte d’Ivoire footballer Yaya Touré, with Touré starring in a new ONE PSA, which debuted today on.<br /><br />The launch of Do Agric in Addis Ababa coincides with the 2014 January African Union (AU) summit, where heads of state have gathered to discuss key development challenges across the continent. I believe that, if the needed attention is given to agriculture, we Africans will not only feed ourselves, but also the rest of the world.”<br /><br />“While other African leaders have made statements of good will, currently only eight countries have kept their promise to invest 10% of their national budgets in agriculture. It is therefore essential to do more, to go further. Agriculture is not only important, it is also vital. Agriculture pays,” said Yaya Touré.<br /><br />A new ONE report, called Ripe for Change: The Promise of Africa’s Agricutural Transformation, calls on African governments to implement an “enhanced CAADP” package of policies to accelerate economic development in Africa through an African-led agricultural transformation agenda steered by the AU’s own CAADP (Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme). The package of policy recommendations, which was developed after a lengthy consultation process with African farmers and farmers associations from all over the continent, includes:<br /><br />1) Make time-bound commitments to meet the Maputo pledge of spending at least 10% of national budgets on effective agriculture investments, through transparent and accountable budgets.<br />2) Eliminate the gender gap in agriculture.<br />3) Strengthen land governance and security of tenure rights.<br />4) Reduce barriers to intra-regional trade.<br />5) Increase R&D investment to at least 1% of agricultural GDP and bolster extension services.<br />6) Integrate sustainability and climate resilience into national agriculture plans.<br />7) Prioritise the reduction of post-harvest loss in national agriculture plans.<br />8) Design nutrition goals into agriculture sector strategies.<br />9) Foster an enabling environment for smallholder integration and responsible private sector investment.<br />10) Accelerate implementation of agriculture plans and ensure results for smallholder farmers.<br /><br />The report also highlights recent success stories resulting from increased agriculture investment and enhanced CAADP-style policy reforms, such as those in Ghana, Ethiopia and Burkina Faso.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"> In Ghana, agriculture is the biggest driver of poverty reduction, with initiatives such as credit reform, targeted subsidies for farmers, and new infrastructure supporting private sector investment, particularly in the cocoa sector. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Perhaps no country illustrates the opportunities that agricultural investment can unlock better than Ethiopia. These African-led successes must now be scaled, adopted and adapted across the region so that small farms can become small firms, young people can find good jobs and African economies can thrive. Heirs Holdings is the only African investor in the project, which is based in San Francisco.<br /><br />Planet Labs aims to transform the way imaging of the Earth is carried out, through the introduction of ultra-small satellites called “doves.” These “doves” circle the planet in low orbit and are significantly cheaper to produce and deploy than existing technology. 41 families forced to leave the country at Murongo village

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /> <span style="font-size: large;">A family of 41 family members from Murongo Village in Murongo Ward, Kyerwa district, Kagera Region was rounded up by immigration officers together with local security officer (MUGAMBO) at 3.00 a.m and forced them to leave the country, alleging them to be living in the country illegally. The head of this family is called Erika, 88 years old.<br /><br />This family was in the morning of 21.1.2014 evicted and damped in the NO MANS LAND area, on the bridge separating Tanzania and Uganda. The family has since been forced to camp on the bridge succumbing to rains, sun, mosquitoes, cold and worse the dangers of falling into the Kagera river beneath the bridge and to being devoured by a crocodile that is feared living in the nearby waters of the Kagera River below the bridge.<br /><br />Attempt to secure their freedom is hitting a dead rock following a somewhat coordinated syndicate to evict this family by the local authorities over a revenue sharing issues over income accruing from rental of a land space onto which Vodacom and airtel have erected their telecom towers.<br /><br />The story behind is that, in the recent past, a wrangle arose between Mzee Erika who owns a piece of land that was identified as a suitable spot for the erection of the telecom towers by Vodacom. The Village chairman became envious on learning that Mzee Erika was promised a regular monthly income for rental of his land for the mast. The wrangle was resolved in a regional court at Bukoba when Mr. Erika was declared rightful owner of the land and therefore legal beneficiary of the rent from Vodacom.<br /><br />Later on airtel also came to invest in the area and Mzee Erika land was again seen as the best spot for the airtel telcom tower. This made the Village chairman more envious. It is told by the villages that were interviewed that, the village chairman decided to connive with other authorities including the immigration and other officers and blacklisted Mzee E\rika as a Ugandan living illegally in Tanzania. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"></span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">Illegal persons have no right to own property (land in Tanzania) and so with this situation, the village chairman working together with the immigration officers descended on this family and branded them illegal immigrants and so inhumanly rounded them at 3.00 a.m and have since been dumped at the bridge of Murongo.<br /><br /> Radio FADECO learnt of the ordeal on 25.1.2014 following a tip off by our news correspondent in the area. The report mentioned the affected family was starving and in danger since having been damped at the bridge since 21.1.2014.<br /><br />A team of FADECO RADIO Staff went to the scene arriving there at 4.00 a.m on 25.1.2014 to follow up the story. On arriving at Murongo border, the family was found lying on the bridge site covered in ramshackled clothes since there were not allowed to carry any belongings. The affected include 23 males and 18 females. There are 3 primary school going children who since have been denied to go to school, 4 infants below the age of 5 and 3 babies stills suckling.<br /><br />FINDINGS:<br /><br />The head of the family is called Mzee Elika Tibahulira , 88 years old and has been living in the area since he was born and his wife is called Mole Tibahulira aged 58. They have their children and grandchildren together making a total of 41 persons.<br /><br /> As journalists, we have tried to make the preliminary investigation into the matter:<br /><br />Immigration officers at Murongo border allege these are illegal immigrants, living in Tanzania since that time even before independence!! The regional commissioner orderd that these people be returned to Tanzania (removed from the bridge) and taken to police and later to court which would determine their citizen staus. The district Commissioner on his part said that these people have to find their way and never to return to their homes.<br /><br />On 26.1.2014 in the morning hours, on orders from the Regional Commissioner, the 41 people were removed by the immigration officers and taken to a nearby police post at Murongo and left there, on word that they would later be taken to court to answer charges.<br /><br />By 6.00 P.M these people were still at the police station without any word from the immigration officers. Radio fadeco visited them and found they were given shelter at the police station and said, they were awaiting to be taken to court.<br /><br />On 27.1.2014 at 5.00 p.m after 24 hours, without charges being opened against them, they were forced to go back to the immigration office by the immigration officers. On reaching the office, they were forced to leave the country, go back to the bridge they have been living since eviction on 21.1.2014. <br /><br />Reports coming from witnesses at the border has told that, these people refused and as a reaction to this, they have bees subjected to thorough beating. Mzee Erika is reported in very critical condition following the beating (and several days of starvation and age). Small children some of whom are very sick and their mothers have been severely beaten up. And their situation is at stake.<br /><br />FADECO RADIO has communicated with the Regional Commissioner who has promised to take up the matter and ensure their safety and that where possible these people be brought to court of law.</span></div> </div>

NEXIM Bank Rated as Best Performing African Development Finance Institution (DFI)

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">The Association of African Development Finance Institutions (AADFI) has rated the Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM) as ‘Best Performing African DFI’<br /></span><a href="http://neximbank.com.ng/"><span style="font-size: large;">The Association</span></a><span style="font-size: large;"> of African Development Finance Institutions (AADFI) has rated the Nigerian Export-Import Bank – NEXIM as ‘Best Performing African DFI.’ The decision was an outcome of the ‘2013 Annual AADFI CEOs Forum of African Development Banks and Finance Institutions’ on the theme "Strengthening African DFIs with Appropriate Standards and Guidelines: 3rd Peer Review & Rating of African DFIs" held at the Serena Beach Hotel & Spa, Mombasa Republic of Kenya from 13-15 November, 2013. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">The Forum marked the conduct of the 3rd Peer Review of DFIs with the AADFI Prudential Standards, Guidelines and Rating System (PSGRS).<br /><br />In the letter conveying the message to NEXIM Bank, titled “CONGRATULATION ON YOUR RATING AS BEST PERFORMING AFRICAN DFI”, Mr. J.A. Amihere, the Secretary General of AADFI, stated, “In the light of your institution’s rating as ‘Best Performing DFI”, we are pleased, on behalf of the Chairman of the Association, to extend our warm congratulations to your Board of Directors and Management Team on this record performance, and urge you not to relent in your effort at entrenching best practices in the operations of your institution as you continue to sustain your development financing mandate.”<br /> <br />According to AADFI, the Peer Review Exercise with the AADFI PSGRS was not a competition but an approach to evaluate DFIs in the various areas of governance, finance and operation in order to identify areas of weaknesses for self-improvement and strengths for consolidation.<br /><br />Suffice to state that considering NEXIM Bank was in the ‘Negative rating’ for a long time before the Roberts Orya-led Management took office in August 2009, it is instructive to note that it quickly moved to ‘B’ rating in 2012, then progressed to ‘Best Performing African DFI’ in 2013.<br /><br />The state of affairs of NEXIM at the time Mr. Roberts Orya took charge of the then newly-constituted Executive Management on August 20, 2009 was such that the financial and operational performance of the Bank had deteriorated to a punching level, in addition to a myriad of other problems. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">These extended to an alarming decline in the quality of risk assets as the Bank’s total loan portfolio of N14.6 Billion was non-performing by 72%. Within that category, N10.03 Billion or 69.05% was classified as completely lost resulting in a decline in the bank’s income.<br /><br />The net effect was a depletion of the Bank’s shareholders funds as a result of accumulated losses, significant decrease in income and tolerance of excessive and escalating overheads. Coupled with these were the issues of non-adherence to corporate governance tenets, non-existent risk management framework, lack of strategic focus and digression from core mandate, lack of visibility of the Bank, etc.<br /><br />In light of the above, the Executive Team set to reverse the problems and ensure NEXIM Bank was able to contribute significantly to the economic development of Nigeria. Under the leadership of its former Board Chairman, Dr. Kingsley C. Moghalu, the Management received approval in 2010 to reposition the Bank to effectively deliver on its statutory mandate and become an ‘effective enabler of Nigeria’ economic transformation. Accordingly, a Corporate Transformation exercise was initiated centering on the key perspectives of Strategy, Risk Management and Corporate Governance, Financial Performance, Operations, Organization and People, with assistance from KPMG Professional Services.<br /><br />The outcome of the exercise was the Corporate Transformation Project (Project Spring) which led to the re-definition of the Bank’s Mission, Vision and Strategic Objectives targeting four sectors, namely, Manufacturing, Agro-processing, Solid Minerals & Services, which have high employment and foreign exchange earning potentials in the non-oil sector of the Nigerian economy. This has become the MASS Agenda of the NEXIM Bank.<br /><br />Subsequently, the Management set out clear transformation implementation activities which included a 5-Year Strategic Plan marshalling out the following areas –<br /> <br />i. clearly defined market penetration action plans with responsibilities and timelines;<br />ii. robust corporate governance and risk management architecture/frameworks in line with international best practice;<br />iii. brand strategy and brand engagement strategy to improve visibility and project the Bank’s image;<br />iv. clearly defined roles and responsibilities;<br />v. organization-wide key performance indices (KPIs) and scorecard to ensure effective monitoring of the Bank’s operations and performance by its staff and shareholders;<br />vi. redesigned and roll out of policies, processes and procedures with documented business functional requirements for the redesigned process to ensure efficiency;<br />vii. IT transformation project which will support the re-designed business processes with minimal approval levels, overlaps, redundancies as well as adequate controls; etc.<br /><br />The Managing Director of NEXIM Bank, Mr. Roberts U. Orya sees the ‘A’ rating by AADFI as a well-deserved reward for all the hard work, painstaking commitment and dedication that his executive management team and staff have put into rebuilding an otherwise moribund institution over the past four years. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">According to him, “The current rating of NEXIM as ‘Best Performing African DFI’ from a negative rating in 2011 by AADFI is a clear testimony that the Corporate Transformation initiative we embarked upon since August 2009 has largely succeeded. The Bank is now better repositioned to deliver on its mandate through more capital injection and other institutional support from our two Shareholders - CBN and Federal Ministry of Finance in terms of supervisory, regulatory oversight and guidance functions. </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">This has increased our capacity to support the growth of the non-oil exports and complement the export boosting activities of commercial banks. In all, we have consistently maintained a robust strategy, efficient operations through sustenance of highly skilled and motivated personnel.”<br /><br />Continuing, Mr. Orya stated that “…the ultimate plan of the Bank is to invite an international rating agency, may be Standard and Poor or Agusto & Co, or any of such agencies to rate the Bank….ideally, this is the time for such a rating….”<br /><br />In concrete terms, between August 2009 and December 2013, the Bank has supported Nigerian exporters, mainly Small and Medium Enterprises (SME’s) in the MASS sectors, to the tune of N30.99Billion, and issued Guarantees valued at US$27.30Million.<br /><br />In terms of developmental impact to the Nigerian economy, the Bank has through its funding interventions generated/sustained over 21,075 direct jobs, in addition to many indirect jobs and facilitated the generation of estimated US$250.32Million annually in foreign exchange earnings.<br /><br />In line with the strategic objective of building a profitable institution with a robust balance sheet, the Management has ensured an appreciable return on the equity investment of the shareholders. <div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Serikali ya Mapinduzi ya Zanzibar imeombwa kuifanyia utafiti wa kina na hatimae kusaidia kugharamia ujenzi wa kudumu wa Bara bara itokayo Unguja Ukuu kuelekea Uzi Kisiwani yenye urefu unaokadiriwa kufikia Kilomita Mbili Nukta Sita ambayo hivi sasa bado iko katika kiwango cha mawe matupu.<br /><br />Ombi hilo limetolewa na Wananchi wa Vijiji vya Unzi na N’ambwa mbele ya Makamu wa Pili wa Rais wa Zanzibar Balozi Seif Ali Iddi alipofanya ziara fupi ndani ya Jimbo la Koani kuangalia maendeleo na matatizo yanayowakabili wananchi wa Jimbo hilo liliomo ndani ya Wilaya ya Kati Mkoa wa Kusini Unguja.<br /><br />Balozi Seif Ali Iddi akipata wasaa wa kuikagua kwa kina Bara bara hiyo ya Unguja Ukuu hadi uzi ambapo Wananachi wa Vijiji hivyo chini ya Mwenyekiti wao wa Ujenzi wa Bara bara hiyo Mzee Shaya Mohd hawakuchelea kumuelezea kadhia wanayopambana nayo wanapovuka sehemu hiyo hasa wakati wa maji Makuu.<br /><br />Mzee Shaya Mohd alifahamisha kwamba Wananchi wa Vijiji hivyo wamefikia hatua ya kukata tamaa kutokana na kadhia ya maji yanayosababisha kupangua mfumo wa mawe licha ya juhudi kubwa wanazozichukuwa katika kupanga mawe hayo katika kila baada ya kipindi kifupi.<br /><br />Alisema baadhi ya wananachi wa Vijiji vya Uzi na N’gambwa hasa akina Mama wajawazito wakati mwengine hulazimika kujifungulia njiani kutokana na kadhia ya Bara bara hiyo jambo ambalo huleta hatari kwa mazingira ya mzazi na motto mwenyewe.<br /><br />“ Bara bara yetu iliwahi kufanyiwa Utafiti na hatimaye kujazwa mchanga katika katika Bara bara hii katika miaka ya thamanini lakini kilichojitokeza mara baada ya kupunguwa kwa kiwango cha maji makuu mchanga wote uliowekwa umekwenda na maji hayo “. Alifafanua Mzee Shaya Mohd Haji.<br /><br />Mwenyekiti huyo wa Kamati ya Ujenzi wa Bara bara ya Unguja Ukuu hadi Uzi - N’gambwa alifafanua kwamba njia pekee ya kukabiliana na tatizo hilo kulingana na mfumo wa maji ya bahari yanayokata katika eneo hilo ni kutumiwa kwa saruji,kokoto na mawe kwenye ujenzi wa Bara bara hiyo ili iweze kudumu kwa kipindi kirefu katika matumizi yake.<br /><br />Akielezea kadhia ya ukosefu wa huduma ya Maji safi na Salama ndani ya Kijiji cha N’gambwa naye Mzee wa Kijiji hicho Bwana Khatib Mussa alimsikitikia Makamu wa Pili wa Rais wa Zanzibar Balozi Seif kwamba Wananchi wa Kiji hicho wanashindwa kuendelea vyema na harakati zao za kimaisha kutokana na muda mwingi kuutumia katika kutafuta huduma hiyo.<br /><br />Mzee Khatib Mussa alifahamisha kwamba huduma za maji safi ambazo ziliwahi kufika Kijijini hapo katika miaka michache iliyopita lakini hivi sasa zimekatika kabisa na kuifanya jamii ya kijiji hicho kuwa katika mazingira ya hatari kiafya.<br /><br />Akizungumza na Wananachi hao wa Vijiji vya Uzi na N’gambwa kwa nyakati tofauti Makamu wa Pili wa Rais wa Zanzibar Balozi Seif Ali Iddi ameiagiza Wizara ya Mawasiliano na Miundo Mbinu Zanzibar kuiweka katika Bajeti yake ya Mwaka Ujao Bara bara hiyo ili Serikali ipate fursa ya kuitengea fedha za ujenzi.<br /><br />Balozi Seif aliwahakikishia Wananchi hao wa Vijiji vya Uzi na N’gambwa kwamba Serikali ya Mapinduzi ya Zanzibar itajitahidi kuona matatizo yanayowakabili wananchi wake katika maeneo mbali mbali hapa Nchini yanapatiwa ufumbuzi wa kina.<br /><br />“ Kwa kweli tunataka kuona Vijiji vya Uzi na N’gambwa ndani ya Jimbo la Koani Wilaya ya Kati Mkoa wa Kusini Unguja vinabadilika na kuwa vya kisasa ili vilingane na vijiji vyengine hapa Nchini “. Alieleza Balozi Seif.<br /><br />Katika kuunga mkono juhudi za Wananchi hao wa Vijiji vya Uzi na N’gambwa Makamu wa Pili wa Rais wa Zanzibar Balozi Seif aliahidi kuchangia Matofali 1,000 pamoja na saruji Mifuko 10 kwa ajili ya kuongeza nguvu za ujenzi wa Jengo Jipya la Skuli ya Uzi linalotayarishwa kwa ajili ya wanafunzi watakaoingia Elimu ya Sekondari hapo mwakani.<br /><br />Balozi Seif pia akaahidi kuzipatia seti moja moja na mipira miwili kwa kila Timu za Soka za Wanawake wa Vijiji vya Bungi na Kidimni pamoja na kuitaka Kamati ya Ujenzi wa Bara bara ya Unguja Ukuu Uzi kufanya makisio ya ujenzi wa Banda la Hifadhi wakati wa kujaa kwa maji liliopo kwenye jiwe kubwa la Kihistoria kati kati ya Bara bara hiyo.<br /><br />Naye Waziri wa Ardhi, Makazi, Maji na Nishati Mh. Ramadhan Abdullah Shaaban akitoa ufafanuzi katika Mkutano wa Hadhara wa Wananachi hao juu ya tatizo la Maji safi na Salama Uzi na N’gambwa alisema Wizara hiyo iko katika hatua za mwisho kutafuta Pampu kubwa itakayokuwa suluhu ya tatizo hilo.<br /><br />Hata hivyo Waziri Shaaban alifahamisha kwamba katika juhudi za kuisaidia nguvu Pampu hiyo wataalamu wa Wizara hiyo wanatarajia pia kujenga Tangi la Maji kati kati ya Vijiji vya Uzi na N’gambwa ambalo litakuja kusaidia kusambaza kwa uhakika huduma hiyo.<br /><br />Akisoma Risala ya Wananchi wa Vijiji vya Uzi na N’gambwa Mjumbe wa Kamati ya Maendeleo ya Vijiji hivyo Ndugu Abdu Mohd Khamis alisema Ujenzi wa Bara bara ya Unguja Ukuu hadi Uzi tayari umeshagharimu jumla ya shilingi za Kitanzania Milioni Mia 166,019,000/- hadi sasa.<br /><br />Ndugu Abu Mohd alisema kati ya fedha hizo Shilingi Milioni 124,633,000 ni nguvu za Wananchi, Shilingi Milioni 25,786,000 zimetolewa na Mbunge wa Jimbo la Koani na Shilingi Milioni 15,600,000 zikatolewa na Mwakilishi wa Jimbo hilo la Koani.<br /><br />Alisema wananchi wa Vijiji hivyo wameishukuru Idara ya Ujenzi wa Bara bara Zanzibar { UUB } kwa hatuzake za mashirkiano na wananachi hao yaliyopelekea kwa kiasi kikubwa kuwawezesha kuitumia kwa unafuu Bara bara hiyo.<br /><br />Mjumbe huyo wa Kamati ya Maendeleo alisema Vijiji hivyo pia vinakabiliwa na tatizo la ukosefu wa huduma za Umeme ambalo Makamu wa Pili wa Rais wa Zanzibar Balozi Seif tayari ameshaiagiza Wizara inayohusika na masuala ya Umeme kulibeba jukumu hilo kwa kutafuta nguzo 10 na waya zake ili kuliondosha tatizo hilo.<br /><br />Othman Khamis Ame<br />Ofisi ya Makamu wa Pili wa Rais wa Zanzibar</span></div> </div>

Wizara ya Fedha yatakiwa kufanya uadilifu

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Uongozi wa Wizara ya Fedha ya Serikali ya Jamuhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania umekumbushwa kuzingatia uadilifu wakati unapotekeleza majukumu yake hasa yale masuala yanayohusu Zanzibar ikiwa ni njia moja wapo ya kuendelea kupunguza au kuondosha kabisa kero za Muungano.<br /><br />Kauli hiyo imetolewa na Makamu wa Pili wa Rais wa Zanzibar Balozi Seif Ali Iddi wakati akizungumza na Uongozi Mpya wa Wizara ya Fedha ya Serikali ya Muungano ukiongozwa na Waziri wake Mh. Saada Mkuya aliyefuatana na Manaibu wake wawili Mh.Adam Malima na Mh. Mwigulu Nchemba walipofika Ofisini kwake Vuga Mjini Zanzibar kujitambulisha rasmi mara baada ya kuteuliwa kushika nyadhifa hizo.<br /><br />Balozi Seif alisema licha ya juhudi na mafanikio makubwa yaliyochukuliwa na Viongozi wa ngazi ya juu wa Serikali zote mbili chini ya Kamati ya pamoja ya kutatua kero za Muungano lakini bado juhudi za ziada zinapaswa kuchukuliwa ili kuona kero zilizobakia zinapatiwa ufumbuzi na kubakia kuwa historia tu hapa Nchini. <br /><br />Alisisitiza kwamba huu ni wakati kwa Uongozi huo kuhakikisha kwamba yale mambo ambayo yanatakiwa kuchukuliwa hatua na Serikali ya Jamuhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania kwa ajili ya Serikali ya Mapinduzi ya Zanzibar yanapaswa kufanywa kwa uadilifu.<br /><br />Makamu wa Pili wa Rais wa Zanzibar alimpongeza Waziri wa Fedha Mh. Saada Mkuya pamoja na Manaibu wake kwa kuteuliwa kushika nyadhifa hizo akielezea matumaini yake kwamba watafanya kazi kwa ushirikiano pamoja na upendo.<br /><br />Akitoa shukrani kwa niaba ya ujumbe aliouongoza Waziri wa Fedha wa Serikali ya Jamuhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania Mh. Saada Mkuya aliahidi kufanya operesheni maalum ya kuondoa kero za Muungano katika kipindi kifupi kijacho.<br /><br />Mh. Saada alisema hilo litawezekana iwapo suala la mawasiliano litazingatiwa kuwa la msingi pamoja na kujenga nguvu za pamoja katika ushiriki wa vikao vya pande zote mbili vitakavyokuwa vikifuatilia utekelezaji wa mikakati inayowekwa na kukubalika.<br /><br />Wakati huo huo Makamu wa Pili wa Rais wa Zanzibar Balozi Seif alikutana kwa mazungumzo na ujumbe wa Wawekezaji wa Sekta tofauti ya kiuchumi kutoka Nchini Italy ambao upo Zanzibar kuangalia mazingira ya jinsi watakavyoweza kuwekeza vitega uchumi vyao.<br /><br />Katika mazungumzo yao yaliyofanyika kwenye ukumbi wa Ofisi ya Makamu wa Pili wa Rais wa Zanzibar Vuga Mjini Zanzibar Kiongozi wa Ujumbe huo Rais wa Chama cha Mchezo wa Karati Duniani Profesa Martin Antonio Morina alisema ujumbe huo umevutiwa na mazingira mazuri yaliyopo ndani ya Visiwa vya Zanzibar jambo ambalo limewapa ushawishi wa kutaka kushirikiana na Zanzibar katika Sekta ya uwekezaji.<br /><br />Profesa Martin Antonio alimueleza Balozi Seif kwamba ujumbe wake uko katika harakati za kuonana na Taasisi husika za uwekezaji hapa Zanzibar katika kuona wanaweza kuwekeza katika ujenzi wa Kituo cha Michezo { Sports Academy }, Huduma za Afya katika Sekta ya Utalii pamoja na suala la Umeme wa jua.<br /><br />Alisema Wafadhili na wataalamu wa sekta hizo tatu tayari wameshaonyea niya ya kutaka kuanzia miradi hiyo ili isaidie kuinua sekta ya Utalii ambayo inaonekana kupewa msukumo mkubwa na Serikali ya Mapinduzi ya Zanzibar sambamba na kutoa ajira kwa Wananchi wazalendo.<br /><br />Akitoa shukrani zake Makamu wa Pili wa Rais wa Zanzibar Balozi Seif Ali Iddi aliueleza ujumbe wa wawekezaji hao kutoka Nchini Italy kwamba Zanzibar imeacha milango wazi kipindi kirefu sasa kwa kukaribisha wawekezaji wa Kigeni kusaidia miradi ya kiuchumi hapa Nchini.<br /><br />Balozi Seif alielezea faraja yake kutokana na nia ya wawekezaji hao kutaka kuwekeza miradi yao ambayo kwa kiasi kikubwa ile waliyoipendekeza imekuwa na umuhimu mkubwa kwa wananchi wa Zanzibar hasa katika kipindi hichi cha mabadiliko ya sayansi na Teknolojia Duniani.<br /><br />“ Sekta zote mlizoainisha kutaka kuzitekeleza hapa Nchini ambazo ni Ujenzi wa Kituo cha Michezo, Hudumza za Umeme pamoja na huduma za afya katika Sekta ya Utalii ni muhimu “.
